Samsung's flagship handset GALAXY S5 has landed in our office. The GALAXY S5 has already sold 11 million sales mark in a few weeks. Design wise, there's not much to talk about. It looks very similar to its predecessor the S4, save for the textured back. What's good to know is that the S5 adheres to (Ingress Protection) IP67 standards. In simple words, the phone is dust and water resistant.

Samsung has retained the tried-and-tested physical home button and capacitive keys. A small change worth mentioning is that the contextual 'Options' button has been replaced by a dedicated 'multitasking' key. There's a micro-USB 3.0 and a separate MHL 2.0 port at the bottom, sealed by a waterproof lead. On the right is a Power / Lock button, and volume rocker is placed on the other side.





There are no surprises in the retail box, it contains:

  •     USB cable.
  •     Earphones.
  •     Quick start guide.
  •     Warranty documentation.

The phone features a 5.1-inch AMOLED screen Full HD resolution. From whatever time I spent with the device, the display looks absolutely stunning. Be it sharpness or colour reproduction, the screen does an excellent job. Like any other AMOLED panel, the contrast is amazing.

The handset offers Android 4.4 Kitkat with Samsung's TouchWiz UI. The interface elements are flat compared to the previous iteration. The colours also look toned down. But, the interface still looks cluttered at some places.

Similar to the iPhone 5s, Samsung's latest flagship sports a 'Fingerprint Scanner'. It's used for unlocking the phone and authorising app purchases. The S5 also comes with a unique heart rate monitor, which works with Samsung's S Health 3.0 app suite.  Heart-rate monitor seems to work. However, the problem here is that the S5 shows my reading at around 100 / minutes, while the company’s very own Gear Fit’s readings fall between 75 and 80. I don’t know what gadget to believe here.

The camera module has been upgraded to 16 megapixel. We haven't fully tested it yet, but I can confirm that it's swift at focusing objects. The camera also packs in interesting features such as Selective Focus and 4K video recording.

The Indian variant comes with Samsung's very own Exynos 5422 chipset. It comprises of octa-core core processor (Quad 1.9 GHz + Quad 1.3 GHz). There's 2 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, microSD card slot, and 2800 mAh battery.

Till now, the S5 is handing any video we throw at it without any issue. All the games are also running smooth. Strangely, it does lag performing simple tasks such as opening the phonebook. To gauge the phone's performance, we ran popular benchmarking tests on the handsets. Here are the results:
