17-inch widescreen monitors. Yeah, at first, I too laughed at that. But it seems that they're here to stay. I'm not that big a fan of 17-inch widescreeners (plainly for the aesthetics), but I like the fact that they offer the same resolution as 19-inch widescreen monitors.
Today, we've reviewed VA1703wb, a 17-inch widescreen monitor from Viewsonic. So let's check it out.
Bundle
Viewsonic VA1703wb comes bundled with:
VA1703wb monitor
15-pin VGA cable
Power cable
Monitor manual and driver CD
The Monitor
VA1703wb has a completely plastic body with a shade of grey.
The monitor is supported by a sturdy base - plastic again.
It has a 17-inch active matrix SXGA anti glare LCD that has a 8ms response time. It supports a maximum resolution of 1440x900. The contrast ratio is 500:1, and the maximum brightness is 250 cd/m2. The viewing angle is 160 degrees (horizontal and vertical).
VA1703wb sports a single D-Sub (VGA) input and a power input slot at the back. The power and OSD buttons are in the front - quite easy to reach and use.
Specifications
Performance
We used DisplayMate to conduct a variety of tests ranging from Geometric Pattern tests to the Color Reproduction test.
Viewsonic VA1703wb cleared the screen geometry and distortion; sharpness and resolution; and screen pixel resolution tests with ease.
It delivered sharp pictures and good color reproduction without any bleeding of colors. The brightness levels were good and there were no issues with the contrast.
As with most LCDs, this one too demonstrates a negligible amount of mismatch in the Horizontal Color Registration (HCR) test.
We also used the monitor for watching movies and gaming. The 8ms response time is good enough to avoid any ghosting in games as well as in movies.
Conclusion
Viewsonic VA1703wb is available for Rs.8,900 with a 1-year warranty. It's a decent buy - especially when you consider the resolution that it offers. Then again, a 19-incher would give you a better widescreen view (only because the panel is bigger). It'd cost just 500-600 bucks more and definitely be more appealing for gamers and movie buffs alike coz when it comes to monitors, size matters.
