Men and women are absolute opposites. Don't take me as an MCP, but try and see where I am coming from. For quite some time now, gadgets that are also aimed at the female segment have become smaller and smaller, while those considered specifically for men have mutated to being bigger and bulkier.
Whoever said 'size doesn't matter' wasn't really looking at the right things for sure.
Teach a man to fish, and he'll never go hungry. Give him a big-ass monitor, and you'll never need to cook again.
Today, we take a look at Acer's AL2216W 22-inch LCD monitor.
The monitor
Supported by a sturdy, broad stand and encased in a matte silver body, the AL2216W has a 473 x 296mm (22-inch diagonally) LCD panel. The screen provides a maximum resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels at 60Hz, and has a pixel pitch of 0.282mm. The panel is an anti-glare type and has a 5 ms response time with a contrast ratio of 700:1 and brightness count of 300 cd/m2.
The screen supports 16.2 million colors and provides a viewing angle of 170" (H) and160" (V). Power consumption is rated at 55W when on, and <2W in Standby mode.
Coming to the interface, the monitor sports a VGA (D-Sub) port and no DVI-D.
Apart from that, it has a 100 x 100mm VESA mounting bracket.
The OSD buttons are placed below the screen, allowing you to configure the display as per your liking. It also features an Auto-Adjust mode, as well as the common video presets like Standard, Text, Graphics, and Movie mode.
Analysis
We used DisplayMate to conduct a variety of tests, ranging from Geometric Pattern tests to the Color Reproduction test (and everything in between).
The Acer AL2216W passed the screen geometry and distortion, sharpness and resolution, and screen pixel resolution tests with a perfect score. The screen offers good picture quality and color reproduction without any bleeding of colors. But it could have been a little sharper. There was an insignificant amount of mismatch with red and green bands in the Horizontal Color Registration test. Also, the contrast wasn't as good as we expected it to be, especially with colors fading towards both extremes of the scale. Furthermore, the Auto-Adjust setting makes the screen a little brighter than most monitors we have tested, but that can be adjusted quite easily. And thanks to its 5ms response time, there was no ghosting in games or movies as well.
Overall, the Acer AL2216W is a good wide-screen monitor that would set many a hearts (of geeks and movie buffs alike) on fire.
Conclusion
The Acer AL2216W is available for Rs.19,999 with a 3-year on-site warranty. Another version of this monitor is also available with a VGA and DVI-D (w/HDCP) for around 500 bucks more. I'll definitely suggest the latter, but in case you don't have a graphics card and don't want to use the DVI-D port, you can always settle for this one.
