There are a few elements that make a classic action game: ugly enemies, imaginative and power-packed weapons, great game play and a hard-ass-behemoth of a boss. The boss level has always been a great climax to some of the best action games of our generation. From the legendary Half-Life to the pioneering Doom series to the thrilling God of War, the boss has always been a test of your skills and intellect and often provides a fitting finale to the entire adventure. Here is a list of some of the nastiest baddies of all time.
Cyber-Demon from DOOM
The list of Bosses has to start with DOOM; we owe a lot to the game. DOOM is the pioneer of FPS gaming. Under a lot of controversy over the blood and gore that the game featured, it probably started the whole concept of boss level. The game featured many zombies and demons. The original DOOM series featured the Cyber-Demon and Spider Mastermind, but I shall discuss Cyber-Demon as he was the final boss in DOOM 3 as well.
The Cyber-Demon resembles a Minotaur, a gigantic and horrifying version of the same. The Cyber-Demon has demonic powers and mechanical implants like a rocket launcher and a metal leg. You can say that he has the best of both worlds or the worst, whatever makes you happy. He consists of 4000 hit-points, splash damaging rockets and hell on his side. He is invulnerable and takes damage only from a soul-cube; it s ironic that you need a soul to kill this demon. The Cyber-Demon can be regarded as one of the most dreaded boss in gaming. He may not be the most challenging boss to kill, but one of the most prominent. The Cyber-Demon of DOOM 3 is large, detailed and looked demonic enough to be remembered.
Nihilanth from Half-Life
If DOOM was the pioneer, then Half-Life was the revolution and rated by most gaming veterans as the best FPS ever developed. The game featured Nihilanth, a weird looking alien, with great power. Honestly he is the weirdest looking antagonist; he looks like an ugly, mutated, overgrown baby. He is the ruler of the XEN world and also its mightiest defender.
His encounter with Gordon Freeman is unforgettable. Nihilanth attacked using energy. His attack include a spray of blue energy orbs and a slower green portal. The portal would either transport Freeman to a swarm of enemies or bring them to Nihilanth for protection. He had a weak-point and if you could figure that out, he wasn t that tough a foe. Nihilanth was protected by spheres of energy that orbited around him, if damaged enough, a small brain was revealed. That was his weak point, once that is known the task is simple. Nihilanth was a perfect end to Half-Life, as he represented every element of Half-Life. You need skill, patience and intellect to defeat him and that s what the game is all about.
Xan from UT
Unreal tournament was an epic game, and I don t mean the developer. Unreal tournament was primarily a multiplayer game, but it featured a great single player campaign. The single player campaign was a challenge, but it was vital to learn the tricks of the multiplayer. The single player was demanding, but nothing could prepare you for Xan. The champion of the tournament, Xan was a remarkable warrior. The level was Hyperspace, an arena so deceptive; it takes a master to win. Xan was quick, he was destructive and he fought like a champion. Xan s AI was phenomenal and he rarely missed. Although a lot depended on the level you played, even the easiest, was not easy enough. Defeating Xan gave you the full satisfaction of triumph. Although he returned again in UT 2004, the impact he had in the original, was tremendous.
Ares from God of War
God of War (GOW) is a game that took the world by storm. It utilized the full potential of the Play-station 2 and delivered great graphics and gameplay. Kratos from GOW is a mortal trained by the Ares, the God of War. The console community was captivated by Kratos.
In the last level of GOW, Kratos has a fierce battle with Ares. It was literally a clash of the Titans; Ares was a God and Kratos the strongest mortal. Ares had enough magic and strength to fight any living soul. Ares had given the Blades of Chaos , powerful magic blades, created in the depth of Hades. He took them away from Kratos, as they were his primary weapons. But Kratos had the power of Pandora s Box, with which he defeated Ares. Taller than the highest mountain in Athens and fierce than the most volatile volcano, he wielded the power of a God, but the spirit of a warrior. He may have been defeated, but he was a worthy foe.
Vergil from Devil May Cry-3
Devil May Cry (DMC) is a crazy hack and slash game. The game revolves around Dante , a devil with a vengeful soul. It is a very successful franchise in the genre and boasts of some really immense and terrific boss levels. There are quite a few boss levels in DMC, but the most prominent boss has to be Vergil (opinions may differ).
Vergil is Dante s twin brother; both sons of the legendary Dark Knight Sparda. Vergil appeared in the prequel to DMC called Dante s awakening. He is disciplined and skilled. Although he is Dante s twin brother, he is exactly his opposite. He is better with the sword and quicker than Dante. He is not evil, but his desire for power makes him Dante s enemy. Vergil and Dante have an immense battle and their capabilities are put to test against each other. Vergil and Dante have three fights, and both prove their worth. Although they both were against each other, they fight together to defeat Arkham. The reason that I didn t choose Arkham as the final boss is because he is a very easy boss to kill, as compared to the fights with Vergil. The game ends with Vergil jumping down demon realm, Dante returns to the world with a tear in his eye and hence the name Devil May Cry
The Boss from Metal Gear Solid 3
There is a very rare possibility that any game can beat Metal Gear Solid (the series) in terms of boss levels. The game features many of them, and that too very detailed and in sync with the story. But one boss stands as the most vital; her name is The Boss or The Joy (known by very few). She was a patriot, a genuine solider and a really hard boss to kill.
The final stage takes place in a field. The Boss is camouflaged in the field and is really quick. The gamer plays the character of Snake, who is equally capable. This makes it a fair fight, but she is no easy adversary. The Boss is a very deep character and one needs to play the game to fully understand her motives. But as an opponent she is a challenge.
She is a master of CQC (Close Quarter Combat) and a competent gunslinger. The final stage has a time limit, which makes it even harder. After you defeat her, she dies and you inherit the title of Big Boss . There have seen many epic battles in the MGS series, Liquid Snake, Volgin and Ocelot. Many fans of the game would have wanted Ocelot in this feature, but we will leave him for the Sequel (along with a few others) that we plan to publish next week.
