Google Earth Poses Threat To India

Google Earth Poses Threat To India

Mumbai attacks prove terrorists' used technology

After India's financial capital, Mumbai, was targeted by terrorists just recently, the Government is forced to focus on satellite images of its strategic installations being made available in the public domain by internet search engines like Google.

The well planned terror attack that struck Mumbai last month proved that the terrorists made the best use of new technology available.

Now, a Mumbai-based advocate has filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in Bombay high court seeking a "complete ban on Google Earth and similar sites like Wikimapia". The PIL states that the websites gave minute details and provided viewers with photographs and "extremely accurate navigational coordinates'' as well.

In the past too, former President A P J Abdul Kalam had voiced serious concern over Google Earth, the free-mapping program available on the Internet, which includes high resolution images of sensitive locations like the Army headquarters, Parliament House, Rashtrapati Bhavan and other defense establishments.

In April 2007, Google Earth was banned in Sudan after atrocities were reported at its Darfur region.

However, the presence of technology has also played an indispensable role as most Mumbaikars and the rest of the world learnt about the well-planned terror strikes from microblogs like twitter, which not only helped in getting first-hand information but also forewarned many of us.

Placing a ban on Google is as stupid as it sounds. Firstly, seeing satellite images on Google Earth does not prove anything. All it means is that you see the exterior location. You dont get any information about the interior floor plan or the interior design. Do you guys think that seeing the Taj Hotel on Google Earth helps in any way. No, it doesnt. You only see that it is located near gateway Of India, and wot else do you find out. So instead of pointing a finger at Google, it will be better for the Government to broaden their outlook on terrorism and adopt some technology themselves. How many Indian cops know what a satellite phone is or how does it work? I bet that hardly 5% would know about it. How about keep some minimum qualification or special technical training for the cops who deal with such things on a daily basis.

Information should be available to all. Terrorists can access secret photos, all they need to have is a symathiser who believes in jihad, no matter what any nymber if moulavis say about what Islam has to say on the matter. Ban cell phones? They are more often in use by the baddies. Ridiculous!

I completely agree with Sandeep. We should ask Google to blur, or better - put a dark circle on sensitive installations - banning it would not be a feasible option

Some1 pls tell me why are we always so vulnerable, why not other places ? Do we lack something ourselves ? Do we do things which others dont ? The rot is the political system and the corruption, weed that out first and we can see what to do with Google. BTW Mumbai trains daily report 15 to 20 known fatal accidents like people falling off or getting run over so x 365 days = 5000 people plus p.a.and countless injuried ones so how about banning the suburban rail also. If we take India as a whole, the figures are in hundred thousand.....two hundred thousand...so....

What morons! Terrorists have also used mobile phones to remote trigger blasts in previous attacks. They also carried dry fruits with them as backup food for the siege. Do we go and ban those things as well? The only way to counter terrorism is via good intelligence operations. You cannot block them once they are on the way to attack, stop everything at the planning stage itself.

Banning Google!!! Instead try this.. Intelligence agencies should take help from google to find out those persons who are looking at those sensitive locations.. So u can track them at their planning stage.. Its not that difficult to develop a software that tracks the ip addresses that are looking at those co-ordinates.. If Google doesnt co-operate then we can think of extreme steps..

We have advanced so much that, now the technology is reachable to poor persons, so the rich/bureaucrats wants to trim those facities, what about the SKODA which they used for the purpose, and PIL files a complaint to ban it,

Real threat is from politicians, if roads provide access that does not mean that you could block the roads for ever. Why Google to be stopped? What about AK47 etc. Why their manufacturing not to be stopped, we put the locks on the door of the house but not at the road from which access is there. It seems that we are trying to escape from the ground reality, why maritime check are not possible because bribe somebody and get along. To feel reality put CC cameras and voice recorders for evry politician, beaurucrats, police personals, you can learn the reality. Why policeman stands at exit of the no entry road because his interest is not in law in order but to have a 'prized' catch, which is not possible to get at entry point! These termites are eating the country. Why not PIL for Presidential type of democracy in India, so that no more hung parliaments. An IAS is needed to run a city but to run a country one knows to give his thumb impression a minimum qualificatoion required. Need of hour is AMERICAN TYPE OF PRESIDENTIAL DEMOCRACY. CELEBRITY AND MEDIA SHOULD START MASS MOVEMENT FOR THES TO AVOID NO MORE HUNG PARLIAMENTS. Start "Ahinsak Andolan" to do that. A. P. Singh

There are agencies around the world except India which give you satellite imagery and other details on payment of a fee, so what's google earth?? India should ban the passing of various satellites over us He He He He

obviously they shld ask google to blur the images of those instalaltions like they did for the US government. that's a much better solution than banning google earth.after all there are plenty of other such services too such as microsoft's live maps and our country is planning to release it's own such service called bhuvan and so banning google earth is practically useless

Haha! News just in. Terrorists were breathing our air during their attack. Terrorists are utilizing our natural resources in helping them with their mission. Some smart lawyer has filed a petition to remove the oxygen in the air & give everyone air-packs to carry around instead.. Bottom-line: Technology can be used by anyone. Its in the hands of the beholder to save lives with it, or take lives with it.

Banning Google does not make sense! After all, are the terrorists only accessing from India? Google maps can be accessed from anywhere. So how would banning it in India make it safe for us? Even the second suggestion of asking Google to blur sensitive areas does not sound reasonable. I think some of our military bases are already off the map. But what can one do about other locations? Would you consider the Taj Hotel as a sensitive area? If that is the case, we'll have to blur all monuments/tall and well-known buildings in India. Lastly, do you think that the terrorists rely on Google only? There are so many other sources from where they can get their information! We already know that they are techno-savy people. So they could very well have many other means of getting information. I completely agree with Rex that our Intelligence agencies have to smarten up and improve their capabilities. The terrorists made use of cell phones. So do you suggest that we should ban cell phones as well? Ridiculous!

What crap is this? Technology should not be censored as a matter off fact nothing should be censored on the Internet. The whole reason of Internet is INFORMATION. The Goverment Of India should rather wake up & make their defense structure proper. Rather than point fingers at google. Look at half off you shmucks agreeing that it should be censored. India is a DEMOCRATIC nation. It's Our right to have information we are not under military rule or anything. If you want to censor something...censor the Internet in countries like Pakistan or Iraq.

by Samir, Mumbai, on Dec 10, 2008 01:23 AM, Report abuse   Reply

Samir is right. If the terrorists are so smart then Indian Intelligence must be smarter. Yet they are covering up their failure first by blaming each other and then technology. Did they mean to say if Google Earth was not here such attacks will stop? Stupid... Govt of India. Think of all the useful things that are available from Google earth. These semi educated Morons with their censorship crap will never never understand.
