According to a survey conducted by US-based Internet firm, comScore Networks, India's online population is growing at the fastest rate in the world.

The survey reveals that the total online population in the country, measured in terms of people aged over 15 years accessing the Internet, grew by 7.8 percent to reach 18.02 million in June, from 16.71 million three months ago.

The growth in the country's online population outscored the rise of 2.7 percent in the world's overall online audience size, which rose to 713 million in June, from 694 million in March of this year.

China witnessed the second-biggest growth rate during the same period at 5.22 percent, followed by Russia at 5.14 percent. Whereas, the online population of Japan, Korea, Canada, and Brazil rose between 2 to 4 percent.

While the number of Internet visitors rose less than 1 percent in USA, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands, countries like the UK, France, and Australia actually registered a decline as compared to the March 2006 levels.

India was found to be the ninth biggest country in terms of total online population, which is one step above its 10th position three months ago. Meanwhile, the US came first in this particular category, with 153 million Web users.

The survey reportedly excluded people frequenting cyber cafes, or accessing Internet from mobile phones or PDAs. However, the total number of people accessing Internet could be much higher if those aged below 15 years, as also data from public computers, mobiles, and PDAs were to be taken into consideration.

Further, the survey ranked Microsoft sites as top Web property in June - with nearly 500 million visitors, out of the total 713 million Web users in the world. Yahoo! and Google sites were ranked at second and third positions with more than 450 million visitors each in the month of June.

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Bob Ivins, managing director, comScore Europe, said that while established Internet players like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo! managed to grab top-spots in the global ranking, several upstarts too quickly found their way into the top league.

Comparing by Growth rate is quite misleading. US has 153 Million internet users. So even though US has only 1% growth rate, that would mean a net addition of 1.53 Million users. India has achieved a growth rate of 7.8% which is at the first look 8 times the growth of USA. But the net addition of internet users in India for the same period of comparision, it is only 1.31 Million users, which is less than US net additions. http://blogs.inspions.net/2006/08/17/india-online-growing-fastest-yes-and-no/

Its a fine statistic - that of India "topping" online growth. But as is the wont of the typical Indian, we look at the superficial figure and not the brass tacks. Yes, 18 Mn is a big number but compare that with a population of over 1000 Mn and then the gap becomes clearer. Yes, you may argue that the entire Indian population is not the "target audience" for such technology (although one would wonder why) but even then, this 18 Mn figure is miniscule compared to the total potential by any standard. In a country which has less than 5 telephones per 100 people, we should look at the ground yet to be covered rather than looking back at what we have supposedly "achieved".

Actually this figure could be double that of 18 million - this figure is there In spite of the Babus who rule India, not because of them- Indian Internet access is expensive in comparison to income levels and all kinds of impediments have been put by powers that are. Indian government should put forth a fast track programme to provide wider & more inexpensive access for Indians to internet as an Urgent National Programme, it will be as beneficial as the Right to Information Act- Internet informs & Internet liberates & it empowers people. BSNL/MTNL should be forced to eliminate un-realistic download/upload limits on the Internet connections on wire, because by using these, U fall into the trap of high bills because of paltry 400 MB limit per month (which U can reach within a few days-just by opening a few sites to browse.)

I agree, India does not have unlimited high speed plans like US. Broadband for home users still means a max speed of 512kbps with download/upload limits imposed on most plans. Unlike US which has very high speed broadband in Mbps that to unlimited. Also unlimited plans in India are still very expensive for a max speed of 512kbps.. Considering all this its a feat in itself that India now has fastest growing online community.. This shows the potential in Indian market that people are ready for very high speed connections at affordable rates.. Companies now need to innovate & start with plans that are economical & have speeds like 2-3 Mbps always online & no restrictions...
