Motorola will manufacture cheaper handsets at its proposed $100 million-worth manufacturing plant at Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
Motorola has announced plans for setting up its $100 million-worth manufacturing unit at Sriperumbudur near Chennai, to meet mounting demand for low-cost mobile phones in the country.
The manufacturing plant will come up on the Sriperumbudur Hi-tech Special Economic Zone (SEZ), being developed jointly by Motorola and the Government of Tamil Nadu. The company has reportedly bought 70 acres of land for setting-up of the facility.
Announcing the plan, Ron Garriques, president - mobile devices unit, Motorola, said that India is a significantly important market for Motorola, and that their decision to make an investment of this scale is a reflection of their continued global commitment to connect the next billion consumers.
Speaking at the occasion, Union Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, said that Motorola's manufacturing facility being set up in the Sriperumbudur Hi-tech SEZ will be a further means to bringing the highest level of technology and electronics manufacturing into the country.
Projected to be operational in 2007, the plant will undertake full-scale production, to support a wide range of Motorola handsets; and is likely to employ about 3,000 people in the initial phase, with the total employment expected to go up to 7,000 in the second phase.
According to sources at Motorola, the company intends to manufacture nearly one million cheaper handsets every month, targeted specifically at the masses. Motorola's manufacturing initiative will also supplement its six R&D centers in the country.
Interestingly, Sriperumbudur, where Motorola plans to build its unit, also happens to house rival Nokia's factory that was set up a couple of months ago. Also in the running is Sony Ericsson that has its R&D facililty in Chennai.
