NAND Flash SSD to Replace HDD?

Samsung Electronics will release the world's first PCs embedded with a 32-Gigabyte (GB) NAND flash-based Solid State Disk (SSD); the Q1 and the Q30.
This marks the beginning of NAND flash moving into a commercial mobile-computing application. Samsung believes this is a breakthrough that would pave the way for replacing hard disk drives (HDD) with NAND flash-based memory disks.
Samsung's two new PCs; the Q1 that is an ultra-mobile computing device, and the Q30 that is a 12.1-inch screen notebook PC, will be available in the Korean market from early June.
The two new SSD-enabled PCs are designed for optimizing portability and resolving the traditional challenges of mobile PCs. The SSD is said to withstand about two times the impact that would cripple a regular hard disk drive. Also, stored data can be more easily retrieved from flash memory as compared to traditional hard drives where PCs are dropped or liquid spills on the device.
The SSD reads 300 percent faster (53MB/s) and writes 150 per cent quicker (28MB/s) than normal hard drives. As a result, it can operate multiple application programs simultaneously, and can edit as well as reproduce large volumes of data more efficiently.
Further, Microsoft's Windows XP OS boots up 25 to 50 percent faster on the SSD than on other drives. In addition, the SSD is 20 to 30 grams lighter than the typical 1.8-inch hard disk drive that weighs around 50 grams, depending on the package type.
The typical notebook PC generates around 30dB (decibels) of operating noise, while Samsung's Q30-SSD will operate in complete silence.
The Q1-SSD will show video and still photos, and play audio, without having to be booted up first which in turn provides at least 30 percent faster access to multimedia content compared to any other portable multimedia player (PMP).
Kim Hounsoo, executive vice president - computing division, Samsung Electronics, said, "PC models based on solid state disks have numerous advantages over traditional hard disk-based models. These include faster booting, greater durability, quieter operation, and increased battery life. The new Q30-SSD and Q1-SSD models are only the beginning. Samsung will continue to lead the market, introducing new portable PC models that bring these benefits to both consumers and enterprise users."
The Q1-SSD will retail for around $2,430 while the Q30-SSD will ship for approximately $3,700.
