ATI has announced its Radeon Xpress 1100 chipset, which is specifically targeted at notebook PCs designed around AMD's new dual-core Turion 64 X2 processor.

ATI claims that the new chipset consumes less power, and demonstrates 33 percent more graphics performance than the Xpress 200M series, which is used in single-core Turion 64-based mobile computers.

Besides, the chipset has DDR2 support of up to 667 MHz and DirectX 9, which make it the ideal tool for media-intensive tasks such as digital content creation, viewing, and editing. Integrated video processing and acceleration makes DVD playback smooth, and the powerful graphics core easily handles the latest 3D games.

The Xpress 1100 delivers quality along with reliable visual power, and as it is designed with AMD specifications, assures incredibly low power consumption thereby guaranteeing increased battery life for laptops with AMD processors.

In a statement, Chris Cloran, vice president - mobile division, AMD, said that as industry leaders, ATI and AMD share a common goal to improve the mobile computing experience by increasing and optimizing performance, while driving thin and light notebook designs.

Cloran further said that AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology has been designed for that purpose, with long battery life and reliability. When combined with ATI's Radeon Xpress 1100 series of chipsets, the two complementary technologies, designed for power efficiency and performance, deliver a leading-edge mobile computing experience.

With industry-leading battery life, superior graphics and digital media capabilities, plus support for Microsoft Windows Vista, the ATI platform powered by AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile technology is said to be well-suited for businesses and consumers alike.

The ATI chipset deals with Mobile AMD Sempron, Mobile AMD Athlon 64, AMD Turion 64, AMD Turion 64 X2 processors, complying with Advanced Power Management settings.

The chipset also supports up to eight USB 2.0 connectors, and theoretically, up to seven PCI slots. The onboard audio controller supports 7.1/5.1 channel output AC-97 sound.

The Radeon Xpress 1100 series will be available through leading notebook OEMs, including Fujitsu-Siemens Computers, Gateway, and HP.
