I've have used the information you have provided for services and everything is working and has speeded up various aspects of those programs. Greetings, everyone! I recently followed this guide to disable many Windows services from this list which didn't seem to be of any use to me. All is going well but I have a minor problem. Previously, I used to get the username ('System' or 'Haroon', which is my username) for all of my running processes in the Windows Task Manager but now, the column is empty for all but one process - the 'System Idle Process'. I don't know what exactly was wrong with this article, but I did all the suggested changes that applied to me on both my desktop and laptop, and on both of them the sound got all screwed up. I was luckily able to get the sound working again on my desktop, but the laptop was not so fortunate. I know the problems were a result of making these changes to Windows Services because it happened to both of them exactly the same. Now on the laptop I have gone through your list again trying to re-enable everything that you suggested to disable. A good idea for you would be to post an article that tells what the windows default settings were for each of these services (automatic/manual). Even put a link to this new article on this page, so that the next guy that screws up his computer by taking your advice can easily fix it again. Wow, you're an idiot. Nobody uses NetBIOS anymore? Ever use UNC names? That's NetBIOS. Turn off computer browser? What happenes when everybody does this and there IS no master browser? NetBIOS breaks, of course. I could go on and on. What's it like being dumb? Boes it sting?

This is positively stupid. You will be trading stability for speed. If this is the kind of control and customization you are looking for you should be running linux, not windows. I promise, however much faster your computer might run (not much), disabling all these services will ensure its ultimate collapse.

Thanks for making this, very handy learned a few things. Am always looking for more ways to get more memory in my system. System restore is good i if you've messd up setting and don't know how to fix things.(old webie, but shared a comp for years learning things now Xp) but they are right virses and such hide out in them and people shuld never do a system restore to try and get rid of them! If I do have to do a system restore I make sure after it's all done to run my scanters/cleaners and then delete all restore points and then make a new one. I also have it set at 7% so it doen't take up quite so much memory.

Has anybody used perfmon (or equivelent) to determine exactly how much they're saving by disabling these services? That's right, a big fat 0. If they're not being used, they're not consuming resources. And in exchange, you've destabalized your system, all because some guy doesn't know what a service does, therefore you don't need it. Feh.

I just want you guys to know that most malware and viruses love system restore and you don't know what your talking about. A smart virus will burry itself in your restore files so when your virus proggie removes it system restore says hey something important has been removed and restores it.

This is one of the most destructive advice that can be given. 1. Many Benchmarks that was run by credible enthusiasts show No real functional improvement in regular computer work or gaming from disabling services. 2. Yeah is saves few pennies of memory, 512MB of DDR memory is $30 upgrade your memory your computer would work faster and you would not have to be penny pinching. 3. On the flip side, thousands of people gets tuck with trouble because they disable services that might be needed by some application. 4. Most of the services that are suggested to switch Of are related to Networking. The most active part of personal computing today is Internet and Networking. A lot of money is spend by users on tech support because of consumers disabling services that are later needed for proper functioning when more applications and capacities are added to the computers.

You actually recommend disabling system restore because you don't feel comfortable using it? Wow. I feel dumber just having read your opinion. System Restore is, by the way, the single most useful (and reliable) recovery tool available, bar none. Think of it as incremental backups intelligently performed at strategic intervals, with a simple user interface. I have never come across a failure (not hardware related) that couldn't be solved with system restore. Disable it only if you're an idiot.

Wow, a bunch of terrible advice all in one central place! This has to be the stupidest thing I have heard in a while: Remote Registry "Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer." We'll let you guess this one out... How long have you been using Windows? Disabling this is BAD IDEA. Most of the other ones are bad advice too, I would love to see how this machine functions in any environment.

UP&P and the SSDP service are sometimes needed to work with cable modems and DHCP from the cable companies. Why, I don't know. Makes no sense to me. I only figured it out by trial and error, but I HAVE duplicated it. Possibly only with the COX cable setup, and heck, maybe only in Tucson, AZ. But has been tested on 5 systems here. Weird, huh?

don't disable "Webclient" if you're on a LAN. my adsl-modem needs it. nice collection, overall. some services are indeed ressource-hogs and redundant in most cases. try disabling - and enabling - if something doesn't work anymore to optimize your performance. it's almost impossible to crash your box unless you're a berserker :-) btw, the "system restore"-function is nothing but complete obsolete, at least when using XP. install a decent antivir (nod32, ..), maintain and backup the registry (e.g. use virtualization when trying out new software) and keep a linux-boot cd for the worst case. and yes, it's a good idea to defragment your ntfs on a regular (daily for heavy users) basis.

Actually, stopping and disabling the SSDP Discovery Service will also stop Canon Camera Access Library 8, so for Canon camera owners with all Canon software installed this is maybe not such a great idea.

Turn Off System Restore System Restore can be a useful if your computer is having problems, however storing all the restore points can literally take up Gigabytes of space on your hard drive. To turn off System Restore: Open Control Panel Click on Performance and Maintenance Click on System Click on the System Restore tab Tick 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives' Click 'Ok' 3. Defragment Your Pagefile Keeping your pagefile defragmented can provide a major performance boost. One of the best ways of doing this is to creat a separate partition on your hard drive just for your page file, so that it doesn't get impacted by normal disk usage. Another way of keeping your pagefile defragmented is to run PageDefrag. This cool little app can be used to defrag your pagefile, and can also be set to defrag the pagefile everytime your PC starts. To install: Download and Run PageDefrag Tick "Defrag at next Reboot", Click "Ok" Reboot 4. Speedup Folder Access - Disable Last Access Update If you have a lot of folders and subdirectories on your computer, when you access a directory XP wastes a lot of time updating the time stamp showing the last access time for that directory and for ALL sub directories. To stop XP doing this you need to edit the registry. If you are uncomfortable doing this then please do not attempt. Go to Start and then Run and type "regedit" Click through the file system until you get to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem" Right-click in a blank area of the window on the right and select 'DWORD Value' Create a new DWORD Value called 'NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate' Then Right click on the new value and select 'Modify' Change the Value Data to '1' Click 'OK' 5.Disable System Sounds Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer makes for various system sounds can slow it down, particularly at startup and shut-down. To fix this turn off the system sounds: Open Control Panel Click Sounds and Audio Devices Check Place volume icon in taskbar Click Sounds Tab Choose "No Sounds" for the Sound Scheme Click "No" Click "Apply" Click "OK" 6. Improve Boot Times A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on. Go to Start Menu and Click Run Type in "Regedit" then click ok Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction" Select "Enable" from the list on the right Right on it and select "Modify" Change the value to "Y to enable" Reboot 7. Improve Swapfile Performance If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file. Go to Start then Run Type "msconfig.exe" then ok Click on the System.ini tab Expand the 386enh tab by clicking on the plus sign Click on new then in the blank box type"ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" Click OK Restart PC 8. Make Your Menus Load Faster This is one of my favourite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu. Go to Start then Run Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok' Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\" Select "MenuShowDelay" Right click and select "Modify' Reduce the number to around "100" This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood 9. Make Programs Load Faster This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn't load properly just undo the change. For any program: Right-click on the icon/shortcut you use to launch the program Select properties In the 'target' box, add ' /prefetch:1' at the end of the line. Click "Ok" Voila - your programs will now load faster. 10. Improve XP Shutdown Speed This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown. Go to Start then select Run Type 'Regedit' and click ok Find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\' Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' Now select 'HungAppTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' Now find 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop' Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' Now find 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\' Select 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' That's it. I hope you find these tips useful - you should now see a noticeable speed improvement if you make all of these changes correctly. Hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised!

Another useless collection. How about we disable this list? If you are going to post this crap at least offer something new. For example, the "Network Location Awareness" is fairly useful if your IP address changes alot (Wireless to wired, lan to lan) etc but without it that stupid little network icon in your systray will show "obtaining address" until reboot or fresh of the network neighborhood. While I agree that this is a fairly dumb way to do it, NLA will make moving from network to network much quicker and you will not need ipconfig /release /renew anymore

Unless you like closing and reopening every app you're running every time you switch WAPs or unplug a cable, you might want to leave this going. What a snarky, superior attitude this writer has, with nothing to back it up! He completely fails to explain the ground rules for his "advice," which is only appropriate for a single PC in a home, connected directly to the Internet probably without a firewall-router. In short, his advice is for the single nerd surrounded by clutter and his collection of blow-up dolls. The modern middle-class family has more than one computer, possilbly with Tivos or shared media servers; for them, all of the network related services are necessary. If you have a recent firewall-router (which everyone should, even single nerds with one PC), it probably supports UPnP, which a program like Limewire will use to automatically thread its way through the firewall. "Nobody uses NetBIOS anymore?" Oh really? Including every program you might install? It's not just for humans. In short, this is a collection of spectacularly bad advice, even if you happen to use your computer exactly like this writer does.

"WMI Performance Adapter" is akin to using SNMP to monitor a PC remotely. It does advance functions like monitoring Active Directory and LSASS.

WebClient == webDav and is a very useful protocol for publishing Calendars, shared files, or for web publishing. It's better than FTP, since it uses only port 80, and it's a big part of OS X on the Mac. The Web Client doesn't open your computer up as a webDav server, it simply allows you to connect to other webDav servers. It's not a security hole, and it's not resource intensive. I would refrain from recommending that users disable the service.

Seriously, this article is a bit too confident. Have you guys not used Windows enought? I'd seriously request users to disable each service one at a time, and then try using all applications. You never know when Windows might start disrupting your apps. (Well, there are some that I would disable without thinking twice. However, others I know will stop some necessary applications.) Final words: Use with a pinch of salt.

Hey Thanks but you know what after I install OS & then some core always needed apps like Norton i always disable some services! Many apps run numerous services like Norton System Works 2006! I disable most! & some services like STOP just before i start playing game (DOOM3, Sims2, NFS MW & other monsters :). Services like Norton autoprotect, Themes, Bluetooth, Wifi i STOP then because i need the rest of the time. But in all a good job guys! Now all ppl can benifit the perfomance i get!!

When u have tips to fasten ur PC, its always a good article, but many of my friends using Xp SP-2, say that Xp SP-2 bring the system down...

I have just disabled most of the services as indicated in your Guide but improvement in performance not yet tested. However thank you for your guidance.

I installed a PC card (NEC) for USB2.0 and cannot install the drivers because I have an Windows XP Pro SP2 "Express Update". When I tried to remove that update from the Add/Remove program I got a warning message telling me that if I did so many (a big list) of my programs will not work properly anymore. So I stopped and I'm using a Canon scanner & a 80 GB WD USB 2.0 HD on much lower speeds with the existing USB 1.1. Will appreciate any usefull help. Thanksin advance.

Just be careful with the Web Client and Wireless zero Configuration. I have a wifi home setup and the it is required to run it properly.

well themes service is not just about running default blue/lunar service as mentioned. turning off themes service would make xp look dull and behave like win 2000.instead right click my computer>properties>Advance>settings,click visual effects>click custom,and uncheck those animation effect,fade effects and side effects.there are altogather 6 of those to be unchecked.this tweak takes very little memory and still makes xp look crisp.so let themes remain automatic.

Wow, nice article. Only problem is that these services conf info (way better than this article covered) has been online since.. ever. Hell, I am even using custom reg patch to make the changes and revert back for everytime I install windows. ALl I have to do is to add and remove new services to that reg patch if there are some new ones.
