Which default Windows XP SP2 services are not required and can be turned off for performance.
An operating system is made up of various components that work with each other. The OS isn't just one object - it's a collection of smaller objects, each of which performs a different task. Their conjunction is what makes an "operating system". Windows calls these components "services", Linux calls it "daemons" and so on. Each service in Windows is essentially, to put it in a simpler way, an application that stays running in the back doing its job when required. Now each service takes up some memory, which isn't good if your system has a low amount of memory (like 256MB or less). Fortunately, not all of the default services are required by all users, so you can turn some of them off to free up some memory.
In this guide, we'll take a look at the default set of services that come with a fresh installation of Windows XP with Service Pack 2. We'll tell you the ones that you don't need and try to tell you why, so you can disable them without any problems. Each service has three options: automatic, manual and disabled. Automatic is essentially "run at startup"; Manual is a service that is started only when required; Disabled is when a service doesn't start at all. Based on the type of a user you are, there are different settings to recommend, but we'll take the safe route and tell you to disable the services that won't cause important features of your Windows to stop working. If you're comfortable with trying out stunts, you can go ahead and disable some of the other services that aren't mentioned here. If something stops working, you can just turn the service back on - there's no permanent effect. Also, since this is a guide to unneeded services that can be disabled, we won't list the services that are already disabled after Service Pack 2 (like Alerter and Messenger) in an effort to keep the list as simple as possible.
One more thing you have to note is that this list is primarily aimed at home users, so we'll be taking out most of the intranet/network related services that don't affect Internet connectivity. If you're using an office workstation with a proper server and all that jazz, you shouldn't be reading this guide.
To enable or disable services, go to Start -> Run -> and type "services.msc" and hit Enter.
Computer Browser
"Maintains an updated list of computers on the network and supplies this list to computers designated as browsers."
Contrary to what it may sound like, disabling this service still allows you to browse a network in your office. And of course, you don't need this at home. Disable it.
Distributed Link Tracking Client
"Maintains links between NTFS files within a computer or across computers in a network domain."
This one sounds useful, but only if you often create files on one computer, shortcuts to those files on another computer, and then move the original files around the network. Not many people do so. In fact, not many people even have NTFS on their Windows for some orthodox reason. Not required on FAT32, at home or even at work if your scenario doesn't match with the description. Disable it.

Americans should never disable any remote access services because doing so could make it harder for authorities to perform routine inspections of your data as part of the war on terror. And it also just happens to be a violation of the Patriot Act! And actually people in other countries should consider very carefully whether they want to become known as a person of interest who is deliberately attempting to blocking access to their data, which might contain information that America might need for reasons of national security. And that would just happen to constitute willful disobedience of orders coming directly from Washington. In other words, what this gentleman suggests is illegal. No matter where you live. You know the old saying: "A word to the wise is sufficient!"

There are other ways to spy on people's information than VPNs and RDC. If the feds can't figure out how, they should hire people who really know what they're doing through a proper public bidding process instead of giving government contracts to their "buddies" and wasting our tax dollars
by Suomynona, Langley, on Apr 11, 2009 09:20 PM, Report abuse
The Patriot Act is unconstitutional. Read this, the 4th ammendment of the constitution: "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." I am not a terrorist, and I would gladly support any effective means of stopping terrorist activity. (note the word "effective"). However, I do not want the government HACKING into my computer. If the government wants to force me to allow them remote access to my computer, I consider that to be equivalent to them banning me from having a lock on the door to my house. Sorry, I am going to disable remote access service on my computer, even if this is illegal.

awesome post...bring more of such things.. I think a Torrent Clients review would be cool now that there are loads of competetion and bitcomet getting banned on many trackers
by Rajesh, Mumbai, on Dec 30, 2005 04:27 PM, Report abuse Reply
I personally moved from BitComet to uTorrent. It's a lot simpler, lighter and doesn't miss out on any essential features. I guess I'll review it!
by Aalaap, Techtree Test Labs, on Dec 30, 2005 05:52 PM, Report abuse
I agree with Aalaap. I think uTorrent is very good, in fact surprisingly good for such a light-weight and small software. It is extremely stable too, unlike some other softwares I have tried... But still, I agree with Rajesh that it would be nice to have a Torrents Softwares round-up....
by Mithun Philip, Kochi, on Dec 31, 2005 12:02 AM, Report abuse
yes, utorrents, is the vest client available for downloading bit-torrents at the moment. with this, u can control the bandwidth, ie, upload and download, as well as u can schedule downloads and also select what out of a torrent u wanna download, for example, if u downloading a music album, then u have the liberty of choosing which tracks u wanna download. all in all it is the best client available rite now.

Hi ppl, i agree that utorrent is light and well featured.but somehow i couldnt get speeds above 2-3 KB/s even in well seeded torrents with my 64 Kbps connection.i have limited my upload speed to 5 KB/s and my global max connections is 50 and max connection per torrent is 25.i get much better speeds with bitspirit 2.7 .i get around 8-9 KB/s.but i would really like to use utorrent. pls someonme help me configure it. Thx.
by Rajesh, Mumbai, on Jan 01, 2006 07:08 PM, Report abuse
to Rajesh above, You have to use a minimum of 6 KB/s upload to get unlimited download. Also, I have found that turning ON encryption allows me to connect to a larger variety of peers (it connects to both unencrypted and encrypted peers instead of just unencrypted ones)

So all this says is; Microsoft is a bunch of idiots thats why they developed and deployed all those 'useless' services. Second message from the article is that spare a few bytes and destabilize your system. If you have wifi which is very common these days, dont you think you need Web client and wireless zero config services?. Next, network security policies today are based primarily on a term called 'dynamic IP'. how would the system cope with this situation if 'Network Location Awareness' service is dead?. Okay, i give up...cannot explain every service function here. But all in all...SP2 is inelligent enough to optimize the system's services wrt available resources. Guys! If your system is slow, must be some kind of spyware or virus. Why is it that when u install a fresh copy of windows, its running so smooth and fast? At that time definitely loads of services are running...Jus a common sense... Someone here gave a very good suggestion. I'l Quote it as it is: ----- Add some system memory and make sure your firewall is installed and working and then FORGET ABOUT IT! by YetAnotherGeek from nowhere on 27/07/06 05:18 PM -----

Microsoft aren't a bunch of idiots. They may not have created software that exactly matched your needs, but if they were a "bunch of idiots" they would have been unable to make the operating system to run all the other software on. You wouldn't even have Hotmail.

Greetings, everyone! I recently followed this guide to disable many Windows services from this list which didn't seem to be of any use to me. All is going well but I have a minor problem. Previously, I used to get the username ('System' or 'Haroon', which is my username) for all of my running processes in the Windows Task Manager but now, the column is empty for all but one process - the 'System Idle Process'. Any help on this will be greatly appreciated, since I really need to keep track of the usernames the processes run under. Thanks in advance. -Haroon Q. Raja.

I don't know what exactly was wrong with this article, but I did all the suggested changes that applied to me on both my desktop and laptop, and on both of them the sound got all screwed up. I was luckily able to get the sound working again on my desktop, but the laptop was not so fortunate. I know the problems were a result of making these changes to Windows Services because it happened to both of them exactly the same. Now on the laptop I have gone through your list again trying to re-enable everything that you suggested to disable. A good idea for you would be to post an article that tells what the windows default settings were for each of these services (automatic/manual). Even put a link to this new article on this page, so that the next guy that screws up his computer by taking your advice can easily fix it again. This is positively stupid. You will be trading stability for speed. If this is the kind of control and customization you are looking for you should be running linux, not windows. I promise, however much faster your computer might run (not much), disabling all these services will ensure its ultimate collapse.

My computer, really full of stuff and things (I even have to use IIS for my application) starts with less than 150 Mb occupied. I don't thing it's a stupid or bad guide. The only thing I leave on is the System Restore, 'cos many times it saved my computer...

Thanks for making this, very handy learned a few things. Am always looking for more ways to get more memory in my system. System restore is good i if you've messd up setting and don't know how to fix things.(old webie, but shared a comp for years learning things now Xp) but they are right virses and such hide out in them and people shuld never do a system restore to try and get rid of them! If I do have to do a system restore I make sure after it's all done to run my scanters/cleaners and then delete all restore points and then make a new one. I also have it set at 7% so it doen't take up quite so much memory.

Has anybody used perfmon (or equivelent) to determine exactly how much they're saving by disabling these services? That's right, a big fat 0. If they're not being used, they're not consuming resources. And in exchange, you've destabalized your system, all because some guy doesn't know what a service does, therefore you don't need it. Feh.
by Justin, Seattle, on Jul 26, 2006 03:10 AM, Report abuse Reply
I just want you guys to know that most malware and viruses love system restore and you don't know what your talking about. A smart virus will burry itself in your restore files so when your virus proggie removes it system restore says hey something important has been removed and restores it.

yeah using sys restore to remove viruses isnt such a good idea... if it does work a simple delete would work also... the tuff1's are stored and replicated everywhere u can look, and there is nothing wrong with turning off the reg service u dumb hax

This is one of the most destructive advice that can be given. 1. Many Benchmarks that was run by credible enthusiasts show No real functional improvement in regular computer work or gaming from disabling services. 2. Yeah is saves few pennies of memory, 512MB of DDR memory is $30 upgrade your memory your computer would work faster and you would not have to be penny pinching. 3. On the flip side, thousands of people gets tuck with trouble because they disable services that might be needed by some application. 4. Most of the services that are suggested to switch Of are related to Networking. The most active part of personal computing today is Internet and Networking. A lot of money is spend by users on tech support because of consumers disabling services that are later needed for proper functioning when more applications and capacities are added to the computers.

You actually recommend disabling system restore because you don't feel comfortable using it? Wow. I feel dumber just having read your opinion. System Restore is, by the way, the single most useful (and reliable) recovery tool available, bar none. Think of it as incremental backups intelligently performed at strategic intervals, with a simple user interface. I have never come across a failure (not hardware related) that couldn't be solved with system restore. Disable it only if you're an idiot.

Got to back up Tyler on this one, I am an IT grunt for an accounting firm, and personal IT guy for my friends and family, and have to say System Restore has pulled off a miracle or two in it's day for me. I would NEVER disable that service. In fact, I have seen some malwares and the like disable it, if that gives you any clues as to it's usefulness

> I would NEVER disable that service. In fact, I have > seen some malwares and the like disable it, if that > gives you any clues as to it's usefulness all true, but you are looking at it from a support point-of-view. 'tweaking' the OS is a completely diffrent approach. people that customize their OS accept the fact that sometimes things dont work out and plan for that accordingly. ;-) if you are not a "brain-dead-user" and understand a bit about how resoucre usage works (and how windows can hog resources), and are completely comfortable reintalling windows in the case of a probem. disabling system restore can free up quite a few resources.

system restore is also a very useful tool for worms and viruses to remain in your system after supposed removal. even if you can clean your machine without a full reinstall the infection is still in the latest restore point just waiting to spring on idiotic system owners.the best defense is a good offense which includes keeping the machine clean to begin with and never having to resort to just going back to an earlier time instead of addressing the real problem, i have had system restore turned off since purchasing this pc and never felt the need to use it

You can right click on my computer, then select manage. The next thing that comes up will offer you a great deal of things to work with, including services.

Wow, a bunch of terrible advice all in one central place! This has to be the stupidest thing I have heard in a while: Remote Registry "Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer." We'll let you guess this one out... How long have you been using Windows? Disabling this is BAD IDEA. Most of the other ones are bad advice too, I would love to see how this machine functions in any environment.

Ummmm, disabling Remote Registry is "a BAD IDEA"? Since when?? Hey "Anonymous from NY" - How long have YOU been using Winblows??? Are you one of the jerks out there that likes to exploit such exploitable services?

UP&P and the SSDP service are sometimes needed to work with cable modems and DHCP from the cable companies. Why, I don't know. Makes no sense to me. I only figured it out by trial and error, but I HAVE duplicated it. Possibly only with the COX cable setup, and heck, maybe only in Tucson, AZ. But has been tested on 5 systems here. Weird, huh?

don't disable "Webclient" if you're on a LAN. my adsl-modem needs it. nice collection, overall. some services are indeed ressource-hogs and redundant in most cases. try disabling - and enabling - if something doesn't work anymore to optimize your performance. it's almost impossible to crash your box unless you're a berserker :-) btw, the "system restore"-function is nothing but complete obsolete, at least when using XP. install a decent antivir (nod32, ..), maintain and backup the registry (e.g. use virtualization when trying out new software) and keep a linux-boot cd for the worst case. and yes, it's a good idea to defragment your ntfs on a regular (daily for heavy users) basis.
by joeker, AT, on Jul 22, 2006 02:06 AM, Report abuse Reply
Actually, stopping and disabling the SSDP Discovery Service will also stop Canon Camera Access Library 8, so for Canon camera owners with all Canon software installed this is maybe not such a great idea.

1. Disable Unnecessary Services Because Windows XP has to be all things to all people it has many services running that take up system resources that you will never need. Below is a list of services that can be disabled on most machines: Alerter Clipbook Computer Browser Distributed Link Tracking Client Fast User Switching Help and Support - (If you use Windows Help and Support leave this enabled) Human Interface Access Devices Indexing Service IPSEC Services Messenger Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing (disabled for extra security) Portable Media Serial Number Remote Desktop Help Session Manager (disabled for extra security) Remote Procedure Call Locator Remote Registry (disabled for extra security) Remote Registry Service Secondary Logon Routing & Remote Access (disabled for extra security) Server SSDP Discovery Service - (Unplug n' Pray will disable this) Telnet TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Upload Manager Universal Plug and Play Device Host Windows Time Wireless Zero Configuration (Do not disable if you use a wireless network) Workstation To disable these services: Go to Start and then Run and type "services.msc" Doubleclick on the service you want to change Change the startup type to 'Disable" 2. Turn Off System Restore System Restore can be a useful if your computer is having problems, however storing all the restore points can literally take up Gigabytes of space on your hard drive. To turn off System Restore: Open Control Panel Click on Performance and Maintenance Click on System Click on the System Restore tab Tick 'Turn off System Restore on All Drives' Click 'Ok' 3. Defragment Your Pagefile Keeping your pagefile defragmented can provide a major performance boost. One of the best ways of doing this is to creat a separate partition on your hard drive just for your page file, so that it doesn't get impacted by normal disk usage. Another way of keeping your pagefile defragmented is to run PageDefrag. This cool little app can be used to defrag your pagefile, and can also be set to defrag the pagefile everytime your PC starts. To install: Download and Run PageDefrag Tick "Defrag at next Reboot", Click "Ok" Reboot 4. Speedup Folder Access - Disable Last Access Update If you have a lot of folders and subdirectories on your computer, when you access a directory XP wastes a lot of time updating the time stamp showing the last access time for that directory and for ALL sub directories. To stop XP doing this you need to edit the registry. If you are uncomfortable doing this then please do not attempt. Go to Start and then Run and type "regedit" Click through the file system until you get to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem" Right-click in a blank area of the window on the right and select 'DWORD Value' Create a new DWORD Value called 'NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate' Then Right click on the new value and select 'Modify' Change the Value Data to '1' Click 'OK' 5.Disable System Sounds Surprisingly, the beeps that your computer makes for various system sounds can slow it down, particularly at startup and shut-down. To fix this turn off the system sounds: Open Control Panel Click Sounds and Audio Devices Check Place volume icon in taskbar Click Sounds Tab Choose "No Sounds" for the Sound Scheme Click "No" Click "Apply" Click "OK" 6. Improve Boot Times A great new feature in Microsoft Windows XP is the ability to do a boot defragment. This places all boot files next to each other on the disk to allow for faster booting. By default this option in enables but on some builds it is not so below is how to turn it on. Go to Start Menu and Click Run Type in "Regedit" then click ok Find "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Dfrg\BootOpt imizeFunction" Select "Enable" from the list on the right Right on it and select "Modify" Change the value to "Y to enable" Reboot 7. Improve Swapfile Performance If you have more than 256MB of RAM this tweak will considerably improve your performance. It basically makes sure that your PC uses every last drop of memory (faster than swap file) before it starts using the swap file. Go to Start then Run Type "msconfig.exe" then ok Click on the System.ini tab Expand the 386enh tab by clicking on the plus sign Click on new then in the blank box type"ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1" Click OK Restart PC 8. Make Your Menus Load Faster This is one of my favourite tweaks as it makes a huge difference to how fast your machine will 'feel'. What this tweak does is remove the slight delay between clicking on a menu and XP displaying the menu. Go to Start then Run Type 'Regedit' then click 'Ok' Find "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\" Select "MenuShowDelay" Right click and select "Modify' Reduce the number to around "100" This is the delay time before a menu is opened. You can set it to "0" but it can make windows really hard to use as menus will open if you just look at them - well move your mouse over them anyway. I tend to go for anywhere between 50-150 depending on my mood 9. Make Programs Load Faster This little tweak tends to work for most programs. If your program doesn't load properly just undo the change. For any program: Right-click on the icon/shortcut you use to launch the program Select properties In the 'target' box, add ' /prefetch:1' at the end of the line. Click "Ok" Voila - your programs will now load faster. 10. Improve XP Shutdown Speed This tweak reduces the time XP waits before automatically closing any running programs when you give it the command to shutdown. Go to Start then select Run Type 'Regedit' and click ok Find 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\' Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' Now select 'HungAppTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' Now find 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop' Select 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' Now find 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\' Select 'WaitToKillServiceTimeout' Right click and select 'Modify' Change the value to '1000' Click 'OK' That's it. I hope you find these tips useful - you should now see a noticeable speed improvement if you make all of these changes correctly. Hopefully you'll be pleasantly surprised!

I experimented with these changes yesterday after reading your post. First I tried it on my 3Ghz 1Gb RAM 250 Gb HD beast that I built a year ago, keeping careful notes and printing screenshots. Short version: its always been fast - now it positively screams!!! I had to set aside the "pre-fetch" task though until I could ask if the pre-fetch command should be added inside or outside the quotes on the target line. An answer to this would be very much appreciated. Was so impressed with the results that I did the same thing to my laptop. Yowza !! Thank you thank you thank you !

Another useless collection. How about we disable this list? If you are going to post this crap at least offer something new. For example, the "Network Location Awareness" is fairly useful if your IP address changes alot (Wireless to wired, lan to lan) etc but without it that stupid little network icon in your systray will show "obtaining address" until reboot or fresh of the network neighborhood. While I agree that this is a fairly dumb way to do it, NLA will make moving from network to network much quicker and you will not need ipconfig /release /renew anymore

Wow. This is some spectacularly horrible advice. NetBIOS...good luck to you in your future endeavors if you think this beast is no longer used. and NLA? Unless you like closing and reopening every app you're running every time you switch WAPs or unplug a cable, you might want to leave this going. Just overall poor advice by someone who would rather spend hours restoring windows than 2 minutes clicking a button and using system restore.

What a snarky, superior attitude this writer has, with nothing to back it up! He completely fails to explain the ground rules for his "advice," which is only appropriate for a single PC in a home, connected directly to the Internet probably without a firewall-router. In short, his advice is for the single nerd surrounded by clutter and his collection of blow-up dolls. The modern middle-class family has more than one computer, possilbly with Tivos or shared media servers; for them, all of the network related services are necessary. If you have a recent firewall-router (which everyone should, even single nerds with one PC), it probably supports UPnP, which a program like Limewire will use to automatically thread its way through the firewall. "Nobody uses NetBIOS anymore?" Oh really? Including every program you might install? It's not just for humans. In short, this is a collection of spectacularly bad advice, even if you happen to use your computer exactly like this writer does.

WebClient == webDav and is a very useful protocol for publishing Calendars, shared files, or for web publishing. It's better than FTP, since it uses only port 80, and it's a big part of OS X on the Mac. The Web Client doesn't open your computer up as a webDav server, it simply allows you to connect to other webDav servers. It's not a security hole, and it's not resource intensive. I would refrain from recommending that users disable the service.
by Jonathan Wise, Albany, on Jul 20, 2006 01:15 AM, Report abuse Reply
Seriously, this article is a bit too confident. Have you guys not used Windows enought? I'd seriously request users to disable each service one at a time, and then try using all applications. You never know when Windows might start disrupting your apps. (Well, there are some that I would disable without thinking twice. However, others I know will stop some necessary applications.) Final words: Use with a pinch of salt.

"Also, since this is a guide to unneeded services that can be disabled, we won't list the services that are already disabled after Service Pack 2 (like Alerter and Messenger) in an effort to keep the list as simple as possible."

well themes service is not just about running default blue/lunar service as mentioned. turning off themes service would make xp look dull and behave like win 2000.instead right click my computer>properties>Advance>settings, click visual effects>click custom, and uncheck those animation effect, fade effects and side effects.there are altogather 6 of those to be unchecked.this tweak takes very little memory and still makes xp look crisp.so let themes remain automatic.

Wow, nice article. Only problem is that these services conf info (way better than this article covered) has been online since.. ever. Hell, I am even using custom reg patch to make the changes and revert back for everytime I install windows. ALl I have to do is to add and remove new services to that reg patch if there are some new ones.

Thanks for the guidlines to disable useless services....but, please guide us how to disable them.
by Dhruv, Mumbai, on Dec 30, 2005 11:21 PM, Report abuse Reply
In services; double click any service. In the properties box that pops up, change "Startup Type" to "Disabled". Or, set it to "Manual", and then go to "Log On" tab, and set enabled/disabled for each Hardware Profile on the computer. This can be used to set differenct hardware profiles and set optimised configurations, like when you want to play heavy games.
