The Mozilla Foundation's popular open-source browser, Firefox, turned one year old yesterday.

The Mozilla Foundation's popular open-source browser, Firefox, turned one year old yesterday. An executive at Mozilla stated, that demand for the Firefox browser had completely out-stripped the company s expectations.

Chris Beard, head - marketing and product management, Mozilla Corp, said, that at the launch of Firefox last November, there were a million downloads on the very first day, and ever since there has been no looking back.

According to the Mozilla Foundation, users have downloaded 106.4 million copies of the open-source Web browser since its debut in November 2004. Further the October results of NetApplications say, that Firefox has grabbed 8.65 per cent of market share, thereby making a dent in rival Internet Explorer's dominance,

Earlier this month the test version of Firefox 1.5 was released to approximately 500,000 users, show-casing features such as faster performance and automatic updates.

Beard stated that several changes are in store, with Firefox entering its second year. The SpreadFirefox site will be re-launched, with a new set of campaigns to promote Firefox. In addition, Mozilla will enter into partnerships with Web service providers and ISPs to reach out to people who aren t very familiar with the Web.

Significantly, Firefox 2 will be launched in mid-2006 and Firefox 3 will be released in Q1 of 2007. Plans are also in the offing, to start scheduled security and stability updates every 6 to 8 weeks.

Since Firefox was introduced I donīt use anything else except when a DirectX site must be accessed. Fast, clean, reliable, tab-based and much-less spyware. Simply a lot better than IE

Opera is so small to download but it's email client is so advanced, years ahead of Thunderbird. I like the feature to easily shift between email and browser tabs. In that way I don't have to toggle between Firefox and Thunderbird and it saves a lot of time. Also I have a button on Opera which can quick hide the eMail panel if I want to browse at full screen.

I prefer Opera 8.5. Its no way slower than any browser out there. Plus it never gave the Connection Timed Out message while opening several web pages simultaneously on a slow 64kbps connection like the Firefox. Thats when I switched over to Opera. Besides the Quick Close Button(X) on the Tab was very convenient for me. There's not so much reason why the new Firefox is better than the free Opera. Give me some good ones, and I'll switch over.

Dude I salute you. Along with Deeps comment's may I add - an Integrated Mail Client, Chat Client, Notepad plus my all favourite - Mouse Gestures - all make Opera a fantastic Browser. My gripe - and i have whined about it before is the Adblock plugin which seamlessly integrates with Firefox, if Opera come out with something like that - not only does Opera become an IE Killer - heck it might just kill the FOX as an afterthought!!! But seriously - you Firefox fans should check out Opera sometime - best of all it is as free as Firefox - No more Ads, so no more gripes about having to pay for it!!! Check it out and revert...

Some of us do not want integrated everything. Some of us have preferred chat clients and email clients. I personally like the fact that I don't have to load up a bloated app to browse the web. As far as the free Opera.. isn't there an ad displayed all the time with it?

This is a reply to the person asking isn't there an ad in Opera all the time, actually. In Opera 8.5 they got rid of the ads. Also Opera has had an ad blocker in it anyway. If you turn it on, it works quite well.

I am a true believer in Firefox, I do not use IE any more, except for win-updates. I hope firefox is compatible with Linspire O/S.

It works on all desktop Linuxes (like Linspire, Xandros, SuSe, Fedora) just fine. Go get it! :)

Firefox isn't just compatible with all Linux desktops out there, it can run on ANY machine and ANY OS, provided it's not too prehistorical (you need enough memory, graphical interface, etc.). Porting to another OS is less difficult because there is only little platform-dependant code in Firefox.

Firefox is brilliant! I use IE only if I HAVE to. Which isn't very often now. ;)

Firefor makes life much easier. They have concentrated on the users needs. Like tabbed browsing, launching a new window in tab/window which opens in the background(No current Focus). Also the extensions make it software worth staying on.

Firefox is excellent. Once you switch and rapidly become familiar with it you'll never touch Internet Explorer again.

LOVE IT! Using v1.5 beta 2, and am appreciating a few of the improvements. Haven't used IE for (except for the blackberry webclient) anything; and don't plan to.
