Microsoft and Yahoo! will provide IM inter-operability while keeping consumer security and privacy first and foremost.
Yahoo! and Microsoft have announced a landmark agreement, to connect users of their consumer instant messaging (IM) services on a global basis. This inter-operability agreement, will give MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger users the ability to interact with each other, forming what is expected to be the largest consumer IM community in the world, estimated to be more than 275 million strong.
Being able to instant message between IM communities is one of the features most requested by MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger users, and Microsoft and Yahoo! have committed to provide IM inter-operability while keeping consumer security and privacy first and foremost.
In addition to exchanging instant messages, consumers from both communities will be able to see their friends' online presence, share select emoticons, and add new contacts from either service to their friends' list, all as part of their free IM service.
Yahoo! and Microsoft plan to introduce these inter-connectivity capabilities, between MSN Messenger and Yahoo! Messenger to customers around the world in the second quarter of 2006, and in doing so expect to help make IM an even more useful part of consumers' online communications and communities.
Terry Semel, chief executive officer, Yahoo! Inc., said, "Yahoo! and Microsoft share a commitment to providing the highest-quality experience possible for consumers, and today's groundbreaking announcement underscores our desire to provide consumer inter-operability between our thriving IM communities. This is truly a turning point for the IM industry, and we believe our agreement with Microsoft will help usher in a new era of IP communications."
Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer, Microsoft, said, "Microsoft and Yahoo! look forward to bridging the divide between our global communities, creating richer and easier ways for our customers to connect. IM inter-operability is the right thing for our customers, our businesses and the industry as a whole, and Microsoft is delighted to help lead these efforts with Yahoo!"

Nobody should post 419/advanced fee scams on the comments. Nobody will fall for this fraudulent crap since they'll be receiving fake cheques/money orders. They'll be encouraged to send out money also.

Now thatz one move to thwart Google Talk...both the net giants are fearing a Google takeover...like they did the net search market...
by crazykudos, New Delhi, on Oct 13, 2005 03:44 PM, Report abuse Reply
Actually -google talk is not much of a threat right now. IM is a worldwide market. and AOL AIM still control greater than 50% of that share alone. A combined MSN/Yahoo platform is strategic to compete against that incumbent platform.
by Karan, New Delhi, on Oct 14, 2005 05:56 AM, Report abuse
True, google has class. But in its current state of its messenger version which doesnt support emoticons, it is not at all a threat to yahoo messenger. But you never know. Google keeps upgrading, and its next release ought to outperform every single competitor. But then, to pull out users who are already cozy with messengers of their choices will definitely be a challenge..

Don't forget that a consumer's view of a company and not just what it's product can do affects their product decision. In my opinion, Google has an outstanding image within the IT industry.

agreed Google took over the search engine market in a storm .. but seems unlike it will do the magic in other sections also .. as (i think) Semel put in some days google doesnt really seem to have definitive plan .. . its just plunged into the spree ... (their jump into the search market wasnt that way). however .. as is goog's way .. it will go on putting up newer version of its existing web applications .. but surely things take time.

yeah that agreed ... however .. gtalk doesnt do much yet either... for instance i keep ymsg as a center fo all my comunications needs .. you have access to your buddies online .. you can have quick access to your address book .. send mail in a click ... and there's weather, news, games and ofcourse, the LAUNCHcast .. and i really can't get why there are people using the msn messenger .. silly me :-B

How come yahoo users didnt ask hem to cut down the RAM usage, yahoo with several windows open takes 50 Megs of RAM, which is way too much for a silly chat program, i've seen great 3D Games which take lesser!
by Jay, Bangalore, on Oct 15, 2005 01:43 PM, Report abuse Reply
Hey are you sure its 50 megs :-O .. here it runs fine you know .. i never tought it could eat 50 megs ... a chat program cant hog that much ... anone can throw more light on this ?

They have done it as they are scared of Google. I do not agree with comments of Terry (Yahoo) and Steve (Microsoft) that they done for customer interest. Why did they not think of customer interest for so many years ?

Arre bhaiya.. yehi to game hain.. corrent decision at the right time. today they may also have the capability to connect voice chat together ... and they will do it also .. eventually .. but later when they'll again have to find a competition with the numbers game again and try to eat each others' numbers .. then they'll come to a solution to merge again ... still its good that the services are free still .. i'm waiting to see the day when most of the service & its features will be made paid-for.

it's a pretty great thing...I've got lots of friends on both networks but only use Yahoo. I think both of them realize that becoming inter-operable is the next step. Gtalk hasn't really caught on and the grand-daddy of all IMs mIRC has basically died leaving just these 2 left. Their alliance may spell the end of all IMs.

This is a good new for the user community as such. Recent development on using the Jabber protocol has allowed google to enter the market. There have been talk to interoperate with AOL which is the leader in IMs with ICQ and AIM combined but AOL never wanted that. I guess Mico and YH with their non-open standard protocol are trying to win in already crowded space. I dont care what they do. I believe some of my friends are there is some IM and others in others. So I use Gaim and Miranda and chat with them on MSN, YAHOO, AIM, ICQ, GTalk. Yes audio and video are missing then if u need to u can start these clients up. Atleast you dont have to run so many messengers. I guess these guys should move to a standard protocol where u can deliver audio, video anything and who delivers it better should be chosen by the users. I guess google with its innovativeness will lead but the iron curtain methods of AOL will be hard to go through.
