Mini-projector Prototype Developed

Epson has announced that it has succeeded in developing a prototype postcard-sized mini-projector using an LED light source.

Epson has announced that it has succeeded in developing a prototype postcard-sized mini-projector using an LED light source.

With a footprint of 13.8 by 10.3 centimeters, the 500-gram prototype can fit into the palm of a hand. The mini-projector can be viewed first hand by visitors to the IFA trade show to be held in Berlin, Germany, from September 2 to 7, 2005.

Koichi Kubota, general manager - projector marketing, Epson, said, "Projectors using 3LCD technology already have advantages in terms of bright, natural images that are easy on the eyes."

LED light sources provide several advantages over conventional lamps including immediate projection readiness, a long running time, and swift switch-off. The use of an LED light source in a projector is a first for 3LCD.

Tushad Talati, head - brand and communication, Epson India, said, "The current development is the latest in a long series of technical breakthroughs for Epson. One of the very first companies to enter the projector market, Epson has stayed ahead of its competition by continually providing features and technologies that offer users real benefits."

Where is your LED projector now in terms of lumens and is it possible to see a demo, perhaps as a video file?

If this is anything like Epson's printers beware. Their printers have built in obselecence, are designed to go wrong 2 months after the warrenty runs out. I read the warrenty contract which states they do not repair or replace printers if the user has used third-party (non epson) inks. When a set of their 6 ink cartrdges (R200-R220) costs more than buying a new printer, its pointless buying their ink. This projecter may well be fine for a year, but is likely based on other epson products to become irrepairably faulty a few weeks or months after the legistated warranty. BE WARNED, R.G

Luxeon makes the brightest LEDs that I have ever seen. The brightest one commercially available is a 5watt one, which puts out 120 Lumens. They also have a 190 Lumen Red-orange , 160 cyan and green, one. All that being said, I think this would barely be acceptable for small (20") screen sizes in very dark rooms. then again, they don't say they use only one LED. If perhaps they used 5 or 6, or even 10, then MAYBE, it would be acceptable for normal uses.

As said 1 led 120Lm For optical purposes more LEd's are not welcome, as light source gets bigger. U need bigger optics. Get all kind of distortions. Even at 120Lm there ale losses on optic system. Perhaps if you watch picture in dark room. Just a croud teaser.

Lumileds (Luxeon is the brand, not the manufacturer) is offering clusters of matched LEDs in the 500 to 1200 lumen range for the lighting industry. I wouldn't be surprised if the same or similar fixtures could be used for projectors. http://www.buildingtalk.com/news/lum/lum120.html

Build this into a keyboard (rather than a laptop screen), or into a palm pilot. Then I'd be impressed. Yes, battery life is an issue, obviously, but once this technology is there, people bragging about 40inch lcd screens will make me laugh.
