Few people know that Motorola was the first company to come out with a Smart Phone convergence back in the year 2000 with the Accompli A6188. Though it did have a few teething problems, it did mark the start of a new era. Unfortunately, the Accompli A6188 failed to create a stir in the market due its basic shortcomings and a huge price tag.

Motorola has launched quite a number of smart phones since then, each improving on some of the drawbacks of its predecessor. Today, we check out one of their newer releases based on the Linux operating system - the Motorola A760.

Looks
The A760 sports a clamshell body, where the exterior shell has a transparent window that shows the screen underneath. When closed the unit is sized at 100 x 53 x 21 mm and weighs 120 g, which is quite heavy. Still with its smooth curved shape it should be quite easy to carry in a trouser pocket or a handbag. The upper clam is more of a protective screen cover with a speaker that covers only 3/4th of the front face.

On opening the clamshell you'll be welcomed by a sharp 320 x 240 pixel, 65,000-color screen on the lower shell. The unit we received apparently had a problem with its RGB configuration, due to which every color had a strong green tinge to it. Due to this I wouldn't be able to give a first hand comment on the color quality, but the general consensus seems to be that the colors are normally more than satisfactory.

As you can tell by the image of the phone, the A760 doesn't sport a hard keypad. Like most PDAs, you will have to rely on the retractable stylus to navigate through the menu and even to use the phone. Below the screen there's a two-way directional pad with a button on either side for power and menu home.

Overall, the build quality of the phone is quite strong and sturdy with a fairly scratch-resistant body and a short antenna. Having no keypad ensures that you won't get any button marks on your screen in the long run.

I bought this phone from Hongkong to United States. The phone is well designed and I quickly fall in love with it in 2 weeks. I am so used to it already. The only drawback is I cannot see the screen clearly under the sun. Other than that, while I was in Hongkong, it worked fine just with any SIM cards. However, I still can't it up with Cingular GSM network in the States. There is not much support from the user manual. I even tried downloading the user manual from Motorola official site but no luck. It is simply I have a really hard time to setup the phone with Cingular GSM in the States. Anyone can help me on this? Appreciated

does any body anything about the functionality/ features of A760i

by krishankumar, chennai, on Oct 15, 2004 10:23 AM, Report abuse   Reply

The A760 looks good, but it is a bit inconveniet when using the stylus for sending an sms or email. One need to practice a lot to use it better, A qwerty key board could have been better?

According 2 me buds,The A 760 is a real neat fone 4 'roun' 19k....But it only has 8 MB...which is like 1 of da biggest drawbacks in da fone....2nd drawback is dat it sometime Hangs...3rd drawback is dat 'ow do u attend calls when Drivin' or Eatin'??If u ask my version,Every1 should wait 4 da Motorola A768...(it has 92 MB of Memory)...which Motorola has already launched in Thailand n some other places n is gonna b launched in India very soon.

by Akki, New Delhi, on Sep 10, 2004 11:38 AM, Report abuse   Reply

It seems Motorola is using India as a dumping ground for outdated phones. DON'T buy this phone. Wait for the A768. Motorola has already launched the newer version of this phone in Thailand and other SE Asian countries. The new version has 92 MB memory and works much better than the A760 which has only 8MB memory. The voice command recognition is excellent - unlike other phones you don't have to train the phone or store your voice for each number. You can also dial by speaking out the digits of number. It also reads out your SMS messages, very clearly. The handsfree speaker sound is excellent. And the A768 comes with a very good free (!) bluetooth earphone. Drawbacks? Yes, Motorola seems to be shy of admitting that the phone runs on Linux. They provide Tata Young's song and picture as a freebie but not even a background image of Tux. The biggest drawback is that there is no disk or file backup utility to backup your data from the phone. You can only backup your phone book, calender and tasks using the Sync utility which makes it a bit risky if you store any other important data (like bank account number and passwords) on the phone.

Hi! This phone's new? I have had it for a while now... like a couple of months! Phone's great - Not a bad buy for 20k. Yes, the interface could be zippier! I double the bit on the camera - but we ran comparitive tests for still pictures between the Motorola A760, Nokia 3650 & Sony Ericsson 630... and the Motorola topped em all! Slow but steady - faced no ERRORS that come with windows - xp or pocket PC. Overall, a good & safe buy if you dare to be different from the Nokia Breed! (Don't get me wrong Nokia Lovers, I love Nokias eternally too - jus a "for a change" phone)

by Akhil, New Delhi, on Sep 01, 2004 01:46 PM, Report abuse   Reply

This is A760 which is already on its way out and not 768. The latter is much better than the former. Also eagerly awaited are the Siemens S65.
