Buying a scanner and a printer separately can turn out to be a major pain. Firstly, they both can be pretty space consuming, and secondly, you need to be a middleman on the PC if you're planning to just photocopy something. This is why multi-functional devices (MFDs) are getting so popular these days.
With a scanner/printer/fax machine all built into one, it can be a pretty nifty solution for most offices. It not only saves time but also some major space. We recently received the Lexmark X1150 MFD that contains a printer and a scanner (a copier too combining both), in one. Read on to find out more about it.
The Unit
The Lexmark X1150 looks pretty impressive with its grey exterior and sleek design. The paper for the printer/copier loads in from the top of the unit, and the upper surface of the unit can be lifted to show a flatbed scanner present inside. On the right hand lower corner of the upper face, the X1150 has five buttons for the power supply, paper load for the printer, one touch scan, one touch greyscale photocopy, and the last one for one-touch color photocopy.
Even for the photocopy function, the X1150 needs to be connected to a PC, which is quite senseless considering that other MFDs are capable of using this function independently. Since the unit does not support any telephony functions, you will need a fax modem connected to your PC in order to use this as a fax printer.
Since scanning and printing are the two major functions of the Lexmark X1150, the review has been divided accordingly.
The Printer
The Lexmark X1150 prints at a color resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi. We ran our standard tests on it at the highest print quality setting (unless specified in the description). The following are the tests and their results:
Font Test: The font test consisted of printing a document containing various fonts starting from point size 24 going all the way down to point size 1.
Result: The last line came out terribly dithered and unreadable even with a magnifying glass. All letters throughout the document had a reddish outline, giving the text a somewhat fuzzy effect.

got the answer from someone on another site yay!! Not sure this will be of much help, but I have the same issue with an HP 2175.. Lexmark is probably like HP in the fact that they didn't release new software for old printers for Vista.. But, there is some good news.. (well in my case and hopefully for you) Vista has built in software for scanning and copying.. It's located in the Windows Photo Gallery. Here is the method I use for my HP.. Maybe it will work with your Lexmark.. Good Luck!

I've owned several Lexmark printers and I must say the 1150 is an extreme disappointment. The scanner functoins do however meet minimal expecations. While other models had their quirks, the price was right and the shortcomings were tolerable. However, the 1150 is far below any reasonable expectations. All in all, I'd have to rate this printer a DON'T BUY. Personally, I'll be buying another (NOT A LEXMARK) printer soon.

I have purchased Lexmark X 1185 all in one nearly a year ago.My aassessment is that it can be used as a scanner perfectly but when it comes to printing it is a different story. As per my calculation it printed 50 pages approx in black and then the print head in black cratridge got jammed badly and nothing can be done.When I went to market I found there exists no compatible cartridge and the price of lexmark black cratidge is Rs.850.Of which not more than 100 pages can be printed as per I calculation.So per black page print cost u Rs.8.My advise to all who are interested in purchasing Lexmark is that do not judge it by looks it is not at all an economiacal and effective printer.

I bought this all in one printer less than 2 years ago, and have had nothing but troble with it! At any given time one function won't work, sometimes the scan, and other times the printer. I am so fed up with this piece of crap! Right now it saying that I don't even have a driver installed so I guess I'll have to install it yet AGAIN! For the millionth time! And just so you know, the drivers that you can download off of lexmark.com DON'T WORK, it says that the file is corrupt so if you lose your disk, you're screwed!!! Much like I am now! Never again will I buy a lexmark!

Services Centres are not accessable to provide better solutions. Purchsed one no. Lexmark X1150 All In One Serial No.26506195120 in Feb.2004 , with an assurance that this will will be compatable with PC to Fax Operations . However after long request no service engineer come at place to attend the problem. Selling a product is a groomy affair, but this may lead adversly the sales, if you can not provide services at door step either through your dealer or service centre network. This is just to provide and share the pro & cones of a product getting painfull to the consumers.

I am amazed at some of the comments. The print quality is good. Even photos were printed. In the past I had Epson, and HP. The cartridge of any inkjet printer is too expensive. Scanning, copying is fine and no qualms. The letdown is on the fax. lexmark certainly lacks in terms of providing product support unlike HP

I have a bitter experience with hp as their service centre says they cannot service hp psc 1210 beyond warranty period and one has to purchase a new one, although you may get Rs 1K as rebate.

Before purchasing this, one has to make sure that the system can be repaired since hp refuses to service the defective units. Of course, they have a buyback offer but you gain only a thousand rupees.

A friend of mine bought one of these Lexmark MFDs and as part of the package, got a great character recognition software that lets him scan a text print and edit it in a text based editor like word. No mention of this in the review.

Conclusion The Lexmark X1150 is available for Rs. 4,850 at your local dealer. The black ink cartridge will cost you Rs. 800 and the color cartridge will come for Rs. 900. Doesn't sound like too much in the short run, but with the cost per page being Rs. 9.98 and the print quality you get, it may be a tad too much. There's no doubt that the scanner is the highlight of the unit. The bottom-line is that if print quality and speed isn't such a big issue for you and you need an MFD that does not cost too much initially, then this might just be the thing for you. Everyone else is suggested to look at their other options.
