Mercury (Kobian) is well known for making products cheaper than anyone else. Be it mice, speakers, cameras, or motherboards. Their 4-in-one camera highlights this character very well. It's cheap, it has all the features that its competitors have, but it's not all that high on quality.

Package contents
The camera comes with a complete range of accessories that you need to get started: USB cable, Wrist Strap, Software, Camera pouch, and TV-out Cable. The software suite included MGI PhotoSuite 4 SE, MGI VideoWave 4 SE, MGI PhotoVista 2.02, and MS NetMeeting.

The first impression you get with this camera is that it's pretty sturdily built. It has a mode dial on the top that you use to toggle between all the camera functions, and that's the only moving part. The rest of the camera can be controlled from the buttons in the back panel. There's no shutter to protect the camera lens, but otherwise, this camera is pretty well guarded.

Coming to the camera, it's a 2.1 megapixel camera with an internal memory of 8 MB. It has 4x digital zoom, 1.5" LCD panel, and a built in flash strobe. It supported a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1280 pixels, and a minimum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.

Features
Okay, this is the part that puts you to sleep, so let's do a quick rundown of all the features that this camera has.

The camera has auto and manual white balance options. You can choose from daylight, shade, tungsten or fluorescent. You can set the exposure to Auto or Manual, from a range of 2.0 to -2.0. It doesn't have a red eye reduction mode; the flash only has Auto, On and Off modes. It supports both NTSC and PAL for TV output. The camera uses four AAA 1.5V batteries, either Alkaline, NiCD or Ni-MH batteries. It has a power save mode that automatically turns off the camera after a minute or two of inactivity. It's very helpful in saving battery life. The camera has no optical zoom, and a very useless digital zoom of 4X, for both preview and playback.

Pics can be transferred via the USB cable, and the camera is automatically detected in Windows XP. The same cable is used to stream video in the Webcam mode.

Photo Performance
We managed to squeeze in 19 pictures at the Super Fine mode of 1600 x 1280 pixels, 27 pictures under Fine mode (1280 x 1024 pixels) and 243 pictures in Normal mode (640 x 480 pixels). It took about 4 seconds to shoot pictures in the superfine mode, and even more when the flash was employed. The quality of the pictures was poor under low light conditions; the flash drowned the entire picture in a sea of blinding light. We tried using the Auto Photo mode, with low and high exposure modes, but the result was either too bright or too dark. When we used the camera in outdoor settings or in well-lit surroundings, it did okay. You had to be very steady with your hands; pics came out blurry when a novice used it. The LCD had some kind of a lag when you moved around; it didn't capture the action too well. On the bright side, the 4 AAA alkaline batteries lasted throughout the phase of the review, and are still going well. We've given this a thorough workout and it still has some juice left.

Webcam
Hey! This can be used as a Webcam as well. We had to install the drivers and software to make it work. We used Windows Media Encoder 9 to capture the input and stream it on our office LAN. We were able to stream live videos at 640 x 480 pixels. If you have the bandwidth, this will stream.

Action!
This was by far one of the longest lasting camcorders that we've seen. It captured a whopping 251 seconds of video and voice on just 8 MB of internal memory. It uses the Morgan Multimedia M-JPEG v3 codec for video, and captures at 320 x 240 pixels. For voice it uses the Intel DVI ADPCM codec, and captures audio at 32 Kbit, 8000 Hz, mono. We managed record up to half an hour of voice on a completely empty camera. The voice quality was good, the microphone managed to capture audio sources that were at a distance. Good for all espionage purposes. An SD card upgrade will give you even more capacity, and it's upgradeable up to 512 MB.

Conclusion
We've reviewed some high end and some low end products; this one is a real winner in terms of features and price. It's priced at an MRP of Rs. 10,500/- but you're sure to find it for a lesser price on the street. If you're looking for a cheap all-in-one solution for under Rs 10,000/-, this is the one. It's not too high on image quality and you'll have to really figure this one out to get it working.
