Spire Enables Siri On Jailbroken iOS 5 Devices

Uses non-copyright material to achieve this.

Spire Enables Siri On Jailbroken iOS 5 Devices

There's no real reason why Siri has been restricted to the iPhone 4S, except to make you upgrade from your not-so-cool-anymore iPhone 4. However, as reported earlier, that didn't stop hackers from porting the much-hyped voice recognition gimmick to the iPhone 4 and 3GS, iPads, and 3rd and 4th gen iPods, using the Spire app. While many such Siri-enabling alternatives exist, Spire developers claim that theirs is the "safest" way to go about it, since it doesn't contain any copyright-infringing material.

Developed by iOS hackers Steven Troughton-Smith, Chpwn, and Ryan Petrich, the Spire requires a jailbroken iOS 5 device and a friend with an iPhone 4S willing to share his authentication token.

LG Publishes Android 4.0 Roll-Out Schedule

Update expected to begin from April of 2012.

LG Publishes Android 4.0 Roll-Out Schedule

LG's update plans were revealed on Facebook last month, after the company created a buzz earlier by announcing that no update will be provided for the Optimus 2X. Other companies such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson, and HTC have already announced update plans for their respective handsets. SE was actually the first to come up with an announcement, shortly followed by Samsung and others. SE's entire 2011 line-up of Xperia handsets is eligible for an upgrade and three of its handsets (Xperia arc S, neo V, and Xperia ray) are scheduled to get the update in March \ April 2012. LG too has followed suit now, with the company via Facebook announcing the roll-out schedule for six of its Android smartphones (including country-specific handsets).  The process will begin from Q2 2012 and will go all the way through Q3 2012 in two waves.

The 4S isn't the iPhone 5 that everyone has been waiting for. However, it's still a significant upgrade over its predecessor. Additionally, going by the ads, Siri seems very impressive. Apple is known for charging a premium for its products, and this one is no exception. Let's find out whether this phone impresses enough to make you overlook its price.

Apple Files Patents For Fuel Cell Technology

May equip iDevices with hydrogen-based power source for extreme battery life.

Apple Files Patents For Fuel Cell Technology

Apple was granted its first fuel cell related patent about six years ago. It involved the use of Liquidmetal as a catalyst for isolating hydrogen to produce electricity. Looks like the infamous patent pusher hasn't given up on fuel cell technology yet, as it has filed a fresh patent focusing on hydrogen fuel cells.

The patent applications reveal little of exactly how or where the fuel cell will be implemented. The description and diagrams submitted by Apple detail implementations with the capability to recharge a smaller battery, as well as get refuelled by it. Unlike vehicular...

Christmas Cheer For 3G Telcos

TDSAT stays DoT's 3G roaming ban, mobile operators relieved.

Christmas Cheer For 3G Telcos

The ban on 3G roaming slapped by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been stayed. The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) decided upon the matter at a special hearing on Saturday, after Bharti Airtel, Essar Vodafone, and Idea Cellular challenged the earlier DoT ruling that 3G roaming agreements between the three were illegal.

TDSAT has asked the DoT to not take any action against the above operators until the next hearing on 3rd January. The point in contention was that the DoT had failed to make it clear at the time of bidding for the 3G spectrum that intra-circle 3G roaming was illegal. No operator was able to procure 3G licences for the entire country, and...

Hizbul Mole In BSNL Arrested

Was providing SIM cards and phones for use by the terrorist outfit.

Hizbul Mole In BSNL Arrested

The J&K police has arrested a BSNL employee who was found to be a militant planted by the terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen. His role was to collect SIM cards and WLL phones for use by the outfit's communication network in the north Kashmiri town of Sopore in the Baramulla district.

Sajad Ahmad Dar, who is allegedly an IT expert, had been working with BSNL Sopore on a contract basis for a year. He is suspected of providing 10 SIM cards and one WLL connection to Hizbul militants. His modus operandi involved securing SIM cards and WLL connections on fake names and addresses, and then supplying them to militants. It is suspected that he was helped by another individual in the telecom company who is yet to be identified.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that such an incident has come to light in the troubled state. Various mobile operators deactivated thousands of SIM cards this summer after it was reported that they were being used to communicate by militants. Even earlier in 2007,...

DoT Rules 3G Roaming Illegal

In response, three operators threaten to withdraw from the 3G scene.

DoT Rules 3G Roaming Illegal

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has asked mobile operators to stop providing 3G roaming services or risk the termination of their roaming agreements. The telecom regulatory body has stated that this is in violation of licence norms. Mobile operators are definitely going to feel the pinch of this new ruling because they stand to lose a lot of revenue.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had earlier made similar inference following which, the Law Ministry, Communications, and IT Minister Kapil Sibal had asked Telecom Secretary R Chandrasekhar to notify all 3G operators operating in this "illegal" manner about the diktat. The DoT plans to penalise operators not abiding by this new ruling.

Earlier this year, no one operator was able to bag a pan-India 3G licence. Therefore, they had no choice but to enter into roaming agreements with each other to provide the service...

MyGrahak.com Brings Online Groceries To Delhi

MyGrahak.com has opened its virtual doors, allowing Delhi and NCR residents to shop online for groceries. According to the website, "E-retailing of food and groceries in India has not been attempted by anybody and thus MyGrahak is a pioneer here providing convenience and comfort for 'Time Poor and Money Rich' customers". I'll have to call bullshit on that claim, because a simple web search yields innumerable websites catering to the many metros of our country.

MyGrahak.com, however, is one of the very few online grocery shops that have their own delivery system in place and offers free delivery, no matter how small the order is. The press release even came with a handy comparison table underscoring the virtues of the website. Here it is, after having passed through my trusty bullshit detector:

Unlike in the Android Market though, these games are paid and will set you back by Rs 190 each. Although the pricing is high, on the bright side, you won't have to deal with the annoying ads.

Sony Denies PS Vita Launch Issues

The Japanese launch of Sony's PS Vita last Saturday has been a mixed bag with 325,000 units sold over the weeend. That's 65% sell-through of the estimated 500,000 retail units shipped on launch day. Although these figures are worse than the 371,000 units sold of the Nintendo 3DS on launch, which wasn't considered to be a success by a long shot, but Sony has bigger problems to contend. The problems being the bad press thanks to the western media picking up a translated apology from the Japanese console maker reportedly...
