Cochin Airport Goes Green With Solar Power

Can generate energy equivalent to power roughly 10,000 homes.

 

Everyday we get to hear gloomy news about the dwindling natural resources. The conventional methods of power generation have adverse effects on the environment. Thankfully, there are people and organisations that make a difference by turning to clean energy by turning to wind or solar power. The latest one to join the ranks is the Cochin International airport.

According to CIAL's (Cochin International Airport Limited) official website, it is world's first airport that completely operates on solar power. To keep this facility up and running, the authorities built a huge solar farm comprising of a whopping 46,150 panels near the cargo complex. This will generate 50,000 to 60,000 units of electricity per day.

The project is a grid connected system that does not involve batteries to store electricity. Instead of that, CIAL has worked out a power banking module with the Kerala State electricity board. During daytime, CIAL provides excess power to the state's grid. And then, buys it back during the night. CIAL claims that the plant will produce 18 million units of power every year, which is roughly enough to power 10,000 homes for a year.
