Meizu To Announce Its First Smartphone In India On May 18

Xiaomi finally gets a worthy competitor.

Meizu has made it official that it will be stepping into the Indian smartphone market this month. The Chinese smartphone maker’s official Facebook page put out a post that took a jab at Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jun (about his meme-worthy Mi 4i keynote) and delivered a message that a Meizu smartphone is finally (officially) coming to India.

India clearly is a ripe market for all types of smartphone manufacturers these days. So much so, even Apple launched its iPhone 6 after the US launch in a matter of weeks. So it was obvious that another high-profile smartphone maker from China was eyeing India as well.

We have been reporting plenty about Meizu lately (the MX5 just hit the rumour mill), and if there was one smartphone that we could see at the official announcement, it would have to be the Meizu m1 note.

The smartphone kind of mimics the iPhone 5c and the Xiaomi Mi 4i, but is pretty big on specs. Also special to Meizu smartphones is its home-grown Flyme 4 OS, which is based on Android but has a unique interface like no other.

The company has a reputation similar to Xiaomi’s in China, but often announces smartphones a bit higher up the smartphone segments. The m1 note is indeed the companies most affordable offering with the MX4 and the MX4 Pro at the top.

Things are indeed going to get interesting now that we have two Chinese behemoths set up shop in one of the world’s biggest smartphone markets.
