Myntra To Shut Down Website; Go Mobile-Only With App

Expect Flipkart to follow suit a few months from now.

Myntra is planning to take one giant leap and completely shut down its website operations from May 1. The Economic Times reports that the company that was acquired by Flipkart last year will run only as a mobile app from May onwards.

This will be a shock to many, but apparently Myntra has reasons for this.

One of those would be that company sees a majority of its sales (70 -80 percent) coming straight from its mobile app.

While many shopaholics would agree that a bigger screen makes more sense, the speed at which products disappear off virtual store shelves could indicate that the modern online shopper does not have the time to shop from the comfort of a desktop.

Whatever online shoppers want, they can get it faster, via the mobile app as it provides a faster interface with quicker load times. More importantly shoppers can shop from anywhere.

This leaves the remainder of the stock accessible to those who login at the end of the day to check out what’s left behind.

The report states that if Myntra’s move to a mobile app turns out to be positive, Flipkart, its current owner may switch to the same in the coming months.

While Flipkart is currently forcing its mobile visitors to download its app, the company has angered plenty of shoppers by doing the same; a move that may see its customers heading elsewhere for a proper big screen online shopping experience.

Myntra’s move can be justified by the fact that most traffic coming to websites from India, comes from mobile devices. Mobile penetration is indeed higher than PC penetration.

Still then not everything can be done with a mobile phone.

In terms of flash sales, we somehow cannot see how Flipkart will be able to pull off those 4 second Xiaomi sales since fixed lines are indeed faster than most 3G wireless networks available in our country today.
