Instagram Now Has 300 Million Active Users; Officially Bigger Than Twitter

The company also used the occasion to announce that it will soon intro verified tags for celebrity, brand and athelete accounts

Instagram has announced that it now has over 300 million active monthly users for its photo app, with 70 percent of them residing outside of the US. Those numbers mean the service is officially bigger than micro-blogging service Twitter, which claimed it had 284 million active monthly users just six weeks ago.

The four year old service which was bought by social network giant Facebook, claims that over 70 million photos are shared each day, and has 30 billion photos in total. “Over the past four years, what began as two friends with a dream has grown into a global community,” said Kevin Systrom, CEO of Instagram.

The company also used the occasion to announce that it will soon launch verified badges for celebrities, brands, and athletes, strengthening the authenticity of content shared on the platform. Twitter started the trend of verifying accounts, which was then followed by Facebook in May 2013, and it has paid off for them both.

Moreover, rather than just deactivating spammer accounts, the company has said it will begin completely deleting them. What's even more impressive is that Instagram hasn't even counted the number of known spammers in its 300 million active monthly user statistics. The service has added 100 million users in a mere nine months.

Along with the impressive numbers Instagram is posting, Facebook now seems stronger than ever. The company's flagship social network now has 1.35 billion active monthly users, Messenger has 500 million and WhatsApp has another 600 million users.
