Windows 10 Will Bring Native Support For .MKV And FLAC Files

Support for the two file formats was part of the recently released Windows 10 build 9860

Microsoft recently released Windows 10 build 9860, bringing along with it native support for .MKV and FLAC media formats. Both formats weren't supported by Microsoft in builds as recent as Windows 8.1, leading to the ubiquitous 'player does not support this file' popup when trying to open them in Windows Media Player.

Gabriel Aul of the Windows Insider Program posted screenshots showing FLAC support in WMP on Twitter, while support for .MVK file formats was unearthed by the geeks over at NeoWin. FLAC support on Windows 10 has taken the high-end audio enthusiast community by storm, given the lossless nature of the format.

Further, Microsoft is now offering platform-level support for both formats, meaning that other third party applications too will be able to play the files. In simpler terms this means users don't have to go through the hassle of installing plug-ins in order to play certain media file formats, which is just great.

The news comes at a time when Microsoft is set to unveil its new consumer-centric features for Windows 10 late in January. It's clear that the company is making amends to reach out to the AV geeks and enthusiasts that use its platform, while also boosting the multimedia prowess of Windows 10.
