Audi's All-Electric Family Car With A 450km Range Is Coming In 2017

The car will be borrow tech from the awesome R8 e-tron and will go head to head with Tesla's Model S

German auto giant Audi has revealed that it is currently developing an all-electric family car with a range of 450-km to rival the Tesla Model S. The upcoming electric vehicle will be built on an all-new platform and is expected to arrive in 2017.

According to AutoExpress, Audi Technical development boss, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, revealed that the car will borrow technology from the company's awesome R8 e-tron project. However, it isn't clear if it will join any of Audi's existing model ranges (A3, A5, A7, etc) or will be badged as a completely new model.

"Such a car is under development," said Hackenberg. "I was able to reengineer the R8 e-tron project and technology with the team and we are on the way to a range of 450km.” He added that the R8 e-tron project was a trailer for another long-range electric car, however the upcoming model will not be a sports car.

Audi is on route to achieving the 450km range with the use of next-generation electric motors and batteries that have a higher power density. To put that into perspective, Volkswagen's head of Powertrain Development, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, said that the motors are five times more efficient that the ones used in the e-Golf.

The company did not reveal any further details, but experts suggest that the Audi's upcoming all-electric car will adopt a saloon body. The large size will make the car more practical and also allow the company to package the large battery pack under the large floor, without encroaching upon boot and passenger space.
