Andy Rubin, The Creator Of Android Leaves Google

One of the co-founders of Android OS is likely to start an incubator for hardware startups

 

Andy Rubin, co-founder of the Android project is parting ways with Google. According to a WSJ report, Rubin is leaving Internet search giant to setup an incubator for hardware startups, while his last role at the company's robotics division will be taken up by James Kuffner.

Google confirmed news of Rubin's departure, and CEO Larry Page said, “I want to wish Andy all the best with what's next. With Android he created something truly remarkable-with a billion plus happy users. Thank you.”

Rubin joined Google in 2005 when the company bought Android, and then headed the project to turn it into the most dominant mobile OS in the world. He ceded control of Android to Sundar Pichai early last year, after which he took up directing robot projects at Google.

Some reports suggest that Rubin's departure was the result of issues he had with the structure of his team, and that research scientist James Kuffner was going to take over robotics projects outside the Google X lab.

Prior to Android, he worked Danger – the company that created the sidekick mobile phone, Apple, General Macic and WebTV, a project which was later sold to Microsoft.
