Intex Announces India’s Cheapest Android Smartphone, The Aqua T2

Comes with specs that will literally make you wonder how the handset runs Android.

Intex has taken the wraps off what is indeed India’s cheapest Android smartphone called the Aqua T2. While the company is keen on delivering Android to the masses, we should wait and see whether it delivers as the specs seem to be a bit too low for an Android smartphone.

While the world was a bit amazed that Google’s reference design for the low-cost Android One handsets includes a quad-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. Intex (who has also signed up for the same program) seems to think otherwise and has delivered what they feel should ideally be called a low cost handset.

The hardware is indeed what worries us in a way; especially the RAM:

  • We get a 3.5 inch display (320 x 480 pixel) display
  • A 1.3 GHz dual-core MediaTek Processor coupled with just 256 MB of RAM and 512 MB of internal memory that is expandable (up to 32 GB)
  • 2 MP camera with an LED flash on the back and surprisingly a VGA sensor up front as well
  • Included are all the regular radios like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 2G connectivity with dual SIM functionality
  • The handset runs Android KitKat 4.4 (even though the minimum requirement is 512 MB RAM) and is powered by a 1300 mAh battery unit

Indeed it is the 256 MB of RAM that worries us, as even 512 MB in an Android handset cannot promise stable performance (forget multi-tasking). Still then, this is a handset designed for those who simply want to own an Android smartphone and run some basic apps.

Intex has priced the handset at 2,699 INR which is pretty low and close to the Firefox OS-based handsets. The Aqua T2 will come in black and grey and is exclusively available on Flipkart.
