Microsoft Is Struggling To Keep Up With Surface Pro 3 Demand

The demand seems to be coming from markets outside the US, but the company hasn't really released any sales figures

Microsoft's Surface line of tablets are in no way popular devices, but it seems that the demand for the Surface Pro 3 outstrips supply in quite a few global markets. However, that doesn't exactly translate to great news for the company, as it means loss of customers and is detrimental to efforts to popularize Windows on tablets.

Microsoft’s Brian Hall promised that the company will push to get more Surface Pro 3 inventory in markets where the device is hard to find. UK, Germany, China, Australia, New Zealand, and Korea are markets highlighted by the company where supply of the Surface Pro 3 isn't up to the mark.

According to TechCrunch, the lack of Surface Pro 3 supply can mean Microsoft is being conservative with Surface shipments after writing off a $900 million loss. It could also mean that demand for the device is greater overseas than in Microsoft's home market, or that there is an actual global demand for the Surface Pro 3.

Whatever be the case, it seems odd that Microsoft is suffering from lack of lack of inventory at a time when it's trying so hard to boost Surface sales. In many ways the Surface Pro 3 is the one device that is widely proclaimed to be the savior Microsoft's tablet lineup, and even received widespread praise from global media.

There however is one positive point to take from the latest news. Even if demand for the device was only marginal, Microsoft can infer it did something right or is on the right path to becoming a strong contender in the global tablet market.
