Microsoft Vows To Clear The Windows Store Of Scammy Apps

The company's focus on quantity instead of quality is now coming back to bite it in the rear end

The Windows Store is apparently full of counterfeit apps who's developers are solely out to take your money and make a run. While even Apple's and Google's app stores aren't free of these scamming apps, despite the strict restrictions put in place, the problem is a lot more pronounced on the Windows Store.

Microsoft now says its going to clean up these scams from its shop, starting with tightening the requirements for app icons, names and categories. With this, the company says users will be able to better know what they're getting for their money, and will make it harder for the scammers to dupe them.

The company says the new restrictions will impact all future app submissions and updates, but it will also undertake a cleanup drive to remove existing shady apps. To begin with, Microsoft says it has already killed off about 1,500 fake or dubious apps off its store, but that's just a beginning.

If you've been unlucky enough to have been duped into buying any of these questionable apps that Microsoft deems unfit to stay on its app store, the company says it will refund your money.

Microsoft has been trying to catch up with the quantity of apps available on Apple's and Google's stores. The company even ran a promotion last year to reward developers $100 per app, regardless of the complexity or time it took to develop. Many believe this led to a complete drop in quality of apps that further worsened Windows' app drought.

Cracking down on spurious apps and ending the pay-per-app program will help Microsoft get over its marred reputation. Still, it will take some doing before you can assume that apps you download on the Windows Store are the real thing, and not someone scamming you of your hard earned money.
