Microsoft Begins Rolling Out Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 For Devs

As expected the update brings Cortana to regions other than the US and also Live Folders.

 

Microsoft has released the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to developers, bringing new features and a tweaked user interface to the platform. The biggest update by far is the broader roll-out of Cortana, the voice activated personal assistant that which was earlier optimized for use only in the US.

While the update is aimed primarily at developers, anyone who is part of the Windows Phone Preview program can snag the update. The other hotly awaited feature rolled out with Update 1 is support for 'Live Folders', eliminating the need for users to download an app from Nokia to place folders on the Home Screen.

According to TechCrunch, the visual design of the Live Tile interface has also been improved upon, mainly to do with the active squares bit. Update 1 is available only for users already running on Windows Phone 8.1 for now, but it wouldn't be farfetched to expect most Windows Phones running the software by the end of 2014.

There are supposedly two updates coming from Microsoft according to NeoWin, who's had a star studded track record of breaking news related to Microsoft. The first update however will just ready Windows Phone 8.1 devices for Update 1, the second will be Update 1 itself.
