Transparent, Flexible & High-Resolution Displays Are The Future, Says LG

The company boasts that by 2017 they'll be able to build a 60-inch Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel

Curved and flexible displays found their first real mass deployment in mobile electronics with the LG G Flex and Samsung Galaxy Round. Now Korean manufacturer LG has now upped the ante by debuting a prototype 18-inch OLED panel that can be rolled up to form a tube just 3cm in diameter.

According to Engadget, the company's flexible roll-able display has a resolution of 1,200 x 810 pixels, and gets its flexibility from the use of a polyamide film, which replaces plastic. The increased flexibility is accompanied by a reduction in thickness.

Alongside the flexible display, LG also showcased a transparent OLED panel which has three times the transmittance of existing see-through LCD panels. The future (according to LG) will be the coming together of both the technologies to create high-resolution, see-through, flexible displays.

As put by LG's Head of R&D In-Byung Kang, "by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches."
