Sony Rolls Out KitKat 4.4.4 For The Xperia Z1 Compact

It looks like the company has set updates as its highest priority.

Sony definitely needs no reminders when it comes to software updates (at least for its flagships). The company has already begun the Android KitKat firmware roll out for its Z range and now it seems that Z1 Compact has also begun receiving the KitKat 4.4.4 update as well.

The update is currently only available in Russia, Italy and Indonesia; a rather strange mix of places. In terms of features, Sony’s firmware update for the Z1 Compact does not add anything new, since there is a custom skin running running on top of it, getting the colourful KitKat 4.4 dialer seems almost impossible. As of now the update only fixes the OpenSSL bug, which allows for a man-in-the-middle attack.

Manufacturer customizations do come in the way of updates and certainly slow down the whole process. But it seems that most buyers do like the custom skins that manufacturers integrate deeper in their devices every year. Else everybody would be owning a Nexus 4 or 5 instead.

The Xperia blog mentions that Android KitKat 4.4.4 firmwares for the Xperia Z1 and Z Ultra are already certified and are ready for roll out as well. So we should be expecting updates for them to roll out in a week or two.
