MediaTek Shows-Off Its New Octa-Core Chipset At CITE 2014

The chipset will bring octa-core processing and 4K video to mid-range devices.

MediaTek had already announced their newest LTE integrated MT6595 chipset sometime back. Now the company has finally let out some of the details regarding this little game changer at the China Electronic Information Expo (CITE) 2014. A chipset, that could soon become potential competition for Qualcomm’s current Snapdragon 80x series.

Similar to the rumoured details, the MT6595 possesses processing power that is almost on par with Snapdragon 801 series and comes with a four Cortex A17 cores firing at 2.2 GHz and four Cortex A7 cores at 1.7 GHz. The Cortex A17 has been the long awaited replacement for the A12 which was the successor to the earlier A9. The GPU is a PowerVR G6200 which is capable of 4K output making it one of the first mid-rangers to deliver 4K technology at a lower price. What’s more is that the chip is capable of supporting 20MP camera modules which again will find many buyers for this new chipset.

Of course what is most important about this chipset, is that supports TD-LTE/FDD-LTE/WCDMA/TD-SCDMA/GSM with aplomb; making it future-proof for mid-range devices for a variety of manufacturers.

Seems like MediaTek knows its market pretty darn well and from the looks of it, it does not plan to shy away being in the mid-range while the competition moves to 4K capability. Thanks to MediaTek we can now expect 4K video to feature and become a standard for mobile phone even in the mid-range in the coming future.
