Free office application suit from Apache Software Foundation offers better MS Office compatibility.

 

Those who are on a tight budget, and want a full-fledged office suit that isn't pirated, can turn to Apache OpenOffice. Version 4.0 of the Apache Software Foundation's free opensource software is now available for download and boasts of some interesting updates.

Apart from the much-needed bug fixes (500 fixes to be precise, as the company claims); the suite now supports 22 languages, sports a new "Sidebar user interface", and  offers better support for MS Office files.

The new Sidebar UI opens up a 'Properties' panel that enables you to edit properties related to the selection: be it text, images, bullet pointers, etc. This context-sensitive panel with collapsible sections can be resized as per your convenience, and can be seen in all applications of the package. The overall UI, however is still similar to the MS Office 2003 suite. To find out more about the new enhancements, check out the software's release notes here.
