Mozilla OS Smartphones Unveiled, To Challenge Android Dominance

These smartphones, although entry-level, can be expected to offer a rich user-experience.

 

The highly-anticipated Firefox OS smartphones have finally been announced. As of now, there are two brands offering handsets running the Firefox open-source mobile operating system. These devices, ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Mini, are both entry-level smartphones. Although the Firefox smartphones haven't yet been launched in India, the ZTE Open has a price tag of €69 (approx Rs 5000) in Spain.

Apart from being built on the open-source Linux platform, Mozilla's mobile operating system offers support for HTML5. Considering how developers will not have to pay for the SDKs to build apps for the platform (unlike Apple's iOS), so you can expect a fairly large quantity of apps in the future. The currently-launched Firefox OS smartphones are built with the following individual tech-specs:

ZTE Open:

  • 3.5" HVGA display.
  • Mozilla Firefox mobile operating system.
  • 1 GHz single-core processor.
  • 3.15 MP rear camera.
  • 256 MB RAM.
  • 512 MB internal storage.
  • MicroSD card slot for expansion up to 32 GB.
  • Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-fi, GPS connectivity.
  • 1200 mAH battery.

Alcatel One Touch Fire:

  • 3.5" HVGA display.
  • Mozilla Firefox operating system.
  • 1 GHz single-core processor on a MSM 7227A chipset.
  • 3.2 MP rear camera.
  • 256 MB RAM.
  • 512 MB internal storage.
  • MicroSD card slot for expansion up to 32 GB.
  • Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi, microUSB connectivity.
  • 1400 mAh battery.
