Acer Showcases 21.5 inch Android Desktop

The computer is set for a US launch initially.

 

At the just concluded Computex 2013, Acer launched the industry's first 8.1 inch Windows 8 running Iconia W3 apart from a slew of Intel Haswell processor driven Ultrabooks, and also showcased a 21.5 inch Android desktop called the Acer N3-220. The Acer N3-220 is an All-In-One (AIO) desktop that runs the Android 4.2.2 Jelly bean operating system. This AIO was displayed at the Computex 2013.

Acer's N3-220 also marks the first of a kind where Android finds itself on a desktop computer, and this concept comes with one distinct advantage over Windows desktops, which is the elimination of the licensing fee paid to Microsoft to obtain OS licenses. The Android desktop would also mean users get a closer link to Google, in the course of using its popular services such as YouTube and Google Play.

No official details about the tech-specs are finalized yet, so the amount of internal storage and integration of a touch screen is uncertain. A 1.6 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 SoC is rumoured to be used, making for the Nvidia Tegra 3 graphics processor's presence. Obviously it will have a 21.5" high-definition display.

The brand name on the demo device was Gateway, a US brand, meaning this 21.5-inch Android desktop may not make its way to India. It will launch in the US around the September-October timeframe, with pricing details not being known at this point in time. When released, the Acer N3-220 desktop could pose a threat to Windows desktops that are used in offices/businesses in general, and the lower-rung Chromebooks that a few companies are engaged in launching.
