AMD Radeon HD 8900M Series GPU Rolls Out

Radeon HD 8970M comes for laptop gaming enthusiasts, as the fastest mobile GPU.

 

Back in January, AMD had announced the Radeon HD 8000 series of mobile and desktop graphics at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The announcement included shipping of Mainstream and Performance/Gaming segments of the HD 8000 series. Now AMD has rolled out Radeon HD 8970M in the enthusiast segment with the introduction of MSI GX70 gaming notebook.

The HD 8970M is at the top of the HD8000M series from AMD. It boasts of 1280 Stream Processors and memory clocked at 1200 MHz. The base Engine Clock is at 850 MHz and it tops 900 MHz with boost. In sense of computing power, the HD 8970M has a 2304 GFLOPS of Single Precision and 144 GFLOPS of Double Precision compute power.

And as per gaming performance, AMD's test results suggests (with Intel Core i7 3770K, 4GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM and Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive) significant improvement over Nvidia's GeForce GTX680M as seen in the chart below:
