Gionee P1 With Android 2.3 Launched For Rs 5000

Gingerbread-based handset with 3.5” screen sports dual-cameras and 1 GHz CPU, but lacks 3G.

Gionee, the mobile products manufacturer which recently set shop in India, has launched a new entry-level Android handset — the P1. The device sports a 3.5” capacitive touch-screen with HVGA pixel dimensions. It is powered by a 1 GHz CPU and is equipped with 256 MB of RAM. It comes with internal storage of 512 MB, but you can add up to 32 GB more to it, via microSD card. A 2 mp rear and VGA front camera take care of imaging. The handset runs the dated Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Here are the product’s specifications:

  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
  • Dual-SIM (2G: 900, 1800 MHz), Dual standby.
  • 3.5” capacitive multi-touch screen with pixel dimensions of 240x640.
  • 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 CPU.
  • 256 MB RAM.
  • 512 MB internal storage, Up to 32 GB microSD support.
  • 2 megapixel rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front camera.
  • Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPRS, Bluetooth, FM radio, GPS.
  • Sensors: Proximity, Gravity, Light, Digital compass.
  • 1500 mAh battery.
  • 4.47” (H) x 2.42” (W) x 0.47” (11.95 mm) (D).

It is not known if Google Play Store is supported, but it is likely that it is. The press release mentions that the loud speakers are really loud, but we'll comment on that after we review the phone. Gionee is selling the P1 in Black colour at an MRP of Rs 5000, and provides a 4 GB microSD card, 2 phone cases, and screen protection as an introductory offer.

We think that for the given configuration, these should become standard accessories rather than being offered just to lure customers. The 256 MB of RAM may be just passable for Gingerbread, but the 512 MB of internal storage is really paltry. We would rather suggest you take a look at other 1 GHz dual cameras and dual-SIM 2G handsets with Android 2.3 such as the Micromax Bolt A35 with a 4” screen at Rs 4250 or the Micromax Smarty 4.3 A65 with a 4.3” screen at Rs 5000. If you don’t really care about the front camera or about the cameras in general, you can save some more and opt for the Micromax Ninja A27 for Rs 3400.
