Next iPhone, iPad mini Rumoured to Face Production Delays

It is blamed on the strained supply of fingerprint scanners, plastic casings, and Retina displays.

It seems that Apple may miss the deadline for the next generation iPhone, also being touted as the iPhone 5S, a low-cost iPhone, and iPad mini due to production delays, according to a report on AppleInsider.com. The website quoted KGI Securities analyst Ming-chi Kuo stating that one of the main issues that Apple is facing is in integrating a fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 5S. This would allow users to unlock the device without having to enter a passcode.

It is said that Apple is still facing problems with implementing this technology because of interference caused from coating materials present under the glass. Apple had acquired AuthenTec last year for $365 million, and it can be assumed that the technology in question is an inheritance from this acquisition.

A low cost version of the iPhone is said to be getting delayed by issues in implementing the coating and surface treatment for the ultra-thin casing that is purportedly going to be made of lastic for the sake of cost cutting. The upcoming iPad mini is facing its own challenge with procuring the hi-res Retina displays that are already in its bigger sibling, the iPad.

The new iDevices were slated to be launched in Q3 of this year, but it remains to be seen if Apple will meet its deadline by resolving all the issues. Faced with increasing competition from Samsung, we think that Apple will go all out to make sure that it doesn't miss the dates.
