LG Foists Expensive Low-end Smartphone Upon World: Optimus L5 II

The single-core LG Optimus L5 II smartphone is expected to be priced in India at Rs 15,000.

 

Having been launched at the Mobile World Congress (MWC 2013), the LG Optimus L5 II is now being rolled out worldwide, including India. Even for a branded device with some emphasis on looks though, its hardware specs are woefully low for an expected price of over Rs 15,000 ($293).

I rubbed my eyes, hoping LG doesn't imagine itself living two years in the past. The "new" phone will have a 4" display, 5MP camera, single-core 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and 4GB internal memory. At this pace, it would take LG a while to announce having sold very much more than 10 million 4G phones.

Have a look at the tech specs of the LG Optimus L5 II:

  • 4 inch display, 800x480 resolution.
  • Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) platform.
  • 1GHz processor (single-core).
  • 5 MP LED flash camera.
  • 512 MB RAM.
  • 4 GB internal memory.
  • micro-SD card slot for expandability up to 32GB.
  • 1700 mAh battery.
  • Single and dual-SIM variants.

LG hasn't admitted that the L II series will be their low-end series either, so consumer beware! Keep in mind, the big brands don't play in the high-specs-low-price zone. Yet in the last month alone, we at TechTree have covered the launch of these quad-core Android-based smartphones:

Admittedly this new phone does feature Jelly Bean - so that is the game plan now, seriously? Pick up yesterday's leftovers, doggie-bag it into a new device with Android 4.1 and voila, we have a new phone!
