Facebook Dragged To Court for 'LIKE' Button

Sued on behalf of late Dutch programmer Joannes Jozef Everardus van Der Meer.

Since 2010, the 'Like' button has been one of the most iconic part of Facebook. But now Rembrandt Social Media has filed a lawsuit filed against Facebook claiming that the company holds two patents for the 'Like' button which originally belonged to Dutch programmer Joannes Jozef Everardus van Der Meer who died in 2004. The patents were awarded to him in 1998, about six years before the launch of Facebook.

BBC News reports that the programmer created his own version of 'like' button for a social networking website called Surfboard, which was a kind of social diary with 'like' being used to approve some posts. The report also claims that Facebook knew about the patents of Van Der Meer and they had made references during their own application.

Lawyer Tom Melsheimer, representing Rembrandt Social Media, said "We believe Rembrandt's patents represent an important foundation of social media as we know it, and we expect a judge and jury to reach the same conclusion based on the evidence". The suit has been filed in Virginia, USA.

Facebook is yet to release any official comment on the claims.
