Apple iTunes Store Sells A Record 25 Billionth Song

The online store is still miles ahead of competition; the lucky buyer will receive an iTunes Gift Card worth €10,000!

Apple's iTunes Store has created a new record by selling its 25 billionth song since it opened around 10 years ago. The song in question is "Monkey Drums" (the Goksel Vancin Remix) by UK-based techno band Chase Buch, which was bought by Phillip Lüpke from Germany. Apple has decided to reward Phillip by presenting him €10,000 in the form of iTunes Gift Card. That converts to around a whopping Rs 7,17,000!

The iTunes Store has over 28 million songs and is available in 119 countries. It is the only legal way to purchase and download music to iDevices available in iTunes Plus, which is Apple's DRM-free AAC format encoded in 256 kbps. Users who have purchased a song on one iDevice, do not have to purchase it again when they log into another iDevice using the same Apple id because it automatically becomes available for free download, thanks to iTunes in the Cloud.

iTunes has also been serving as a launchpad of sort for upcoming artists because even an unsigned and  independent singer can put up his/her music and let the users decide if the music is good or not. This provides an unprecedented opportunity as the store doubles up as a platform for new artistes to showcase their talent.

While it primarily deal with music, the iTunes Store also has paid as well as free podcasts, music videos, movies, TV shows, audiobooks, and apps. Songs, TV shows, videos, and audiobooks have a 90 second preview, while there is a 30 second preview for movies.

iTunes does have competitors from Microsoft (Xbox Music), Amazon, Samsung, and recently Google, among several others, but it is still way ahead as far as sheer numbers is concerned. The number we are talking about is over 28 million worldwide songs, 1 million US podcasts, 40,000 US music videos, 3000 US TV shows, 20,000 US audiobooks, 45,000 US movies, and also over 700,000 App Store apps.
