Videocon Launches Dual-SIM A20 And A30 Android Phones; Prices Start At Rs 5000

New 3G smartphones with dual cameras mark the company's entry into the inexpensive Android phones market.

Both, the A20 and the A30 GSM handsets support dual-SIM dual standby. 3G is supported, although it is very likely that only one SIM will support the newer mobile network standard, with the other working on 2G. While the A20 runs Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), the A30 has Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Bluetooth, GPS, and dual cameras are some of the other common features.

Here are the specifications of the Videocon A20:

  • Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).
  • Dual-SIM (GSM + GSM) with dual standby.
  • 3.5" capacitive touchscreen with pixel dimensions of 480x320.
  • 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU with 256 MB RAM.
  • 512 MB internal storage, 16 GB microSD support.
  • 3 megapixel rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front camera.
  • GPRS, EDGE, 3G (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with hotspot, Bluetooth with A2DP.
  • FM radio with recording, No HDMI.
  • GPS (with A-GPS).
  • 1350 mAh rechargeable battery.

The specifications of the Videocon A30 read thus:

  • Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).
  • Dual-SIM (GSM + GSM) with dual standby.
  • 4" capacitive touchscreen with pixel dimensions of 480x320.
  • 1 GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU with 512 MB RAM.
  • 4 GB internal storage, 32 GB microSD support.
  • 5 megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED flash, 0.3 megapixel front camera.
  • GPRS, EDGE, 3G (HSDPA 7.2 Mbps), Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with hotspot, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP.
  • FM radio with recording, No HDMI.
  • GPS (with A-GPS).
  • 1500 mAh rechargeable battery.

Both smartphones come preloaded with various apps including Facebook and History Eraser. The Videocon A20 and A30 are priced at Rs 5000 and Rs 7300 respectively.

From the specifications, it is clear that both devices target the mid-range consumer segment. The A30 has a fast CPU, but the 512 MB of RAM is insufficient for ICS to run well. The 4 GB of internal storage doesn't help things either. The A20, even with the older Gingerbread, might perform even worse with just 256 MB of RAM and a paltry 512 MB of internal storage. Just some additional RAM would have made things a lot better.
