19th Oct, 2012
Google has invited members of the press for an event on 29th October. Of interest are the words "Join us for an Android event" and"The playground is open" in the invitation — the same as when they launched Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and the Nexus 7 16 GB tablet based on the same OS. That bit of wording has sparked speculations that this will be the launch event for Android 4.2 and a 32 GB variant of the tablet. The word "play" alludes to Google's Play Store. The rumour is also that the company will show off the Nexus 4 — LG's first Nexus device, which is also rumoured to run the new mobile OS.
The Nexus 7 was initially launched in a 16 GB version with Android 4.1 at the Google I/O event on 28th June. Sporting a 7" HD display with pixel dimensions of 1280x800, and powered by an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core CPU and 12-core GPU, this slate claims up to 9 hours of continuous video playback. Weighing just 340 grams and a killer price tag of just $200 (approx Rs 11,500), it would have sold hot and fast if it had come to the Indian market. However, it is only available in Australia, Canada, the UK, and the US as of now. An additional 16 GB with an upgraded OS will make the deal even sweeter.
The LG Nexus 4 will also run Android 4.2; it will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core CPU, Adreno 320 GPU, and 2 GB of RAM. It will sport a 4.7" IPS HD screen with pixel dimensions of 1280x720, yielding an effective 318 ppi. The quad-band GSM smartphone will feature an 8 MP auto-focus camera with LED flash, 1080p Full HD recording, a front camera for video calling, 8 GB of internal storage, and A-GPS with turn-by-turn navigation.
The Android event will begin at 10 am EST in the US (8:30 pm IST) on 29th October. If you can't make it to New York, fret not — the entire event will be webcast live at youtube.com/android.
