Uber Launches 'Request a Ride for Others' In India

All you have to do is to set location of the pickup and select the person who will be taking the ride from your contacts or enter a new number.

Uber has recently announced yet another feature known as 'Request a Ride for Others' alongside 'Dial an Uber' feature that we covered yesterday, Aug 18.

The new feature aims to make it easier for riders and their friends and families to get around the city, even if they haven’t downloaded the Uber app.

Announcing the launch Apurva Dalal, Head of Engineering, Uber India said, “We are excited to launch ‘Dial an Uber’ and ‘Request a Ride for Others’ for riders in India. Designed to offer simple and more convenient ways to book a ride, these India-first innovations are testament to Uber’s focus on using its technological prowess to make mobility reliable and accessible for everyone."

Speaking about 'Request a Ride for Others', it enables people who need reliable rides, such as elderly, but don't have smartphones or have never downloaded an app, to easily get access to reliable transportation. This new feature allows users across all cities in India to actually book a ride on behalf of their family and friends.

So, how does it work? Well, you have to enter the pickup location of the person you are requesting for, after which, you will be prompted to pick who the ride is for. You have to choose from recently used contacts, pick from your contact list, or enter a new number.

On the confirmation screen either chose to have the rider pay in cash for the trip or change your payment method to pay for them electronically. After requesting, the rider will get two messages with driver/car information and a link to track the ride themselves.  The Driver is supplied with the rider phone number to contact them directly. And, you can continue to track the requested trip from within your app.
