San Diego-based wireless communication company Qualcomm plans to introduce its small low-cost laptops 'Kayak', worth just Rs.10,000 in India in the second half of 2009. The primary objective of the Kayak is to access the internet.

Since it is 3G capable and since 3G is being rolled out all over India, the low cost Kayak is capable of bringing the internet to the rural masses over cell phone data networks, particularly in areas that lack wired infrastructure for internet service.

Senior Vice-President and India Head of Qualcomm, Kanwalinder Singh said, "We will introduce Kayak Internet access platform in second half of next year and this device leverages 3G chipsets as well. The main USP is that it can compute in low power scenario like India. It will cost about Rs 10, 000."

Kayak is a reference design for building low-cost wireless-computing devices designed to fill the niche that exists between desktop PCs, which require landlines or separate accessories for connectivity and Internet-capable wireless devices. It uses Qualcomm's dual-core mobile station modem chipsets to provide both computing and connectivity.

He further stated his belief that developing markets like India seeking connectivity are inevitable and concepts such as Kayak that leveraging 3G wireless will be a key to success in helping these areas join the global online community. Qualcomm has been recently pushing its phone processors into PC territories such as desktop computers by adding computing features such as web browsing and e-mail onto cell phones.

They had recently globally launched Kayak PC alternative, which is a computing device that can be connected to a keyboard, mouse and monitor and lets you browse the internet using a Web 2.0-capable browser from Opera Software and do several other normal computing functions.
