It will be part of Intel s Xeon line of processors and code named 7400 based on the Dunnington core, which incidentally will also be the last of the Penryn series.

September 15th is the day Intel plans to begin fabrication of its first 6 core chip. Now before you get too excited and start kicking yourself for purchasing that new quadcore recently, these initial chips will be designed for Servers and not Desktops. It will be part of Intel s Xeon line of processors and code named 7400 based on the Dunnington core, which incidentally will also be the last of the Penryn series.

It will be produced using the same High-K metal gate process and will boast of 16MB of L3 cache. These new chips will also feature a monolithic design just like Nehalem will be designed. What this means is all six cores will be on a single piece of silicon instead of stitching together three dual cores like they do on the current quad-cores. Not only does this improve efficiency but also reduce current leakage.

Some of the vendors already announcing Xeon 7400 servers include Sun Microsystems, HP, Dell, IBM, and Unisys. But what has this got to do with the average customer? Well nothing really, except don't be surprised to see 6 core desktop variants maybe as soon as next year.
