India plans manned lunar mission by 2015

Jayesh Limaye, Oct 24, 2008 1051 hrs IST

ISRO has revealed that it plans a moon mission and that it would gear up for this complex and challenging task.

After the successful launch of the lunar mission Chandrayan I, India now aims to send a man to the moon and that could happen as soon as by 2015. Having entered the elite club of six who have sent spacecrafts to the moon, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has revealed that it plans a moon mission and that it would gear up for this complex and challenging task. Along with India, the elite six consist of the U.S., former Soviet Union, European Space Agency, China and Japan.

"Now we have a little bit of breathing time (after today's launch), we are looking how we can design a capsule, which can carry two astronauts onboard a GSLV rocket. This is a very complex and challenging task, first of all to conceive a module, which can predict the condition of human life in space. It is a big challenge in terms of technology and realization," said G Madhavan Nair, ISRO Chairman.

He also stated that the astronaut selection and training, along with improving the safety standards are also key issues that are considerably complex to handle. "Considering all these, we have prepared a project report and this had been cleared by the Space Commission and is awaiting the government approval. Based on this, we will have the first man mission from Indian soil before 2015," said he.

"ISRO would try to handle the proposed mission without any help from countries that had prior experience in manned missions. It will be completely driven by us. However, if there is any scope for meaningful collaboration, we will consider it," G Madhavan Nair added.

Come on now, I also am Australian, and you cannot judge us on one ignorant person like Nicholas, just as I can't when I bump into an Indian of similar bias. You are naive to insinuate one nations heart follows one ill-informed voice, for fools are spread the world over. This is a fantastic event for humans, and a brilliant 'in your face' by India, to the elite agencies who, seemingly, are loosing the plot with their directions. China and India should be applauded for their achievements and in decades to come, we will likely look back at these historic events as monumental. I suggest people should read a little about He3 and it's potential benefit it could provide our rapidly choking Earth. You will learn that this non-radioactive fusion energy source is a far superior option to the current coal burning/uranium depleting ones these nations are forced to use. So, stop pointing fingers, and how about jumping on the "Earth's Survival" bandwagon and do something proactive like rallying our Australian Government to enter the space program with them? I'm certain we could fit the scope for a "meaningful collaboration".

I don't understand how a third world, underdeveloped country like India can justify funding this. It's not like there is a return from this investment. We will not be mining He3 or colonising planets in our life times. It is, purely and simply, an excercise in pride. I'm Australian, and we are very good friends with you Indians, but my advice would be to invest in your country and once you have reached developed status, meaning the entire population has access to food, education, healthcare, employment etc., then start to throw money at unneccesary projects like this.

by Nicholas, Adelaide, on Oct 24, 2008 02:14 PM, Report abuse   Reply

Your mistaken Nicholas. The goal of this mission is to attract other countries to use India's cost effective space program to launch their satellites by demonstrating our capabilities. China is a low manufacturing destination, India is a low cost destination for technical solutions, be it IT or Space. The billions of dollars that will come in, will be used to do just that i.e educating, feeding etc. So this is no show of pride it is an investment in exports. Now it may hurt some developed nations pride who don't have the know how or inclination, but that's a diff topic.

Nicholas, Being an Australian, you have a tendency to be narrow minded, no wonder you have lost out in the Service Industry race. or were you ever in such a race?? This would help India in the long run. It has opened up an entire new Industry!!! We can launch a rocket at 1/10 of NASA's cost!!! So even you Australians would be behind us begging us to launch your rockets!! Who would that benefit?? The people of India. :)

Yep, it reminds me of the same argument when computers were introduced in India , in early 80's .. Oh! this is not for countries like India where people need jobs, not computers which will eliminate all the jobs and unemployment will rise. yeah right!

Nicholas, I am a proud Australian and whoeheartedly disagree with you. Indias development of space techology is to be celebrated by all who believe in the benefits of the technology and intelelctual capital developed from space programs. We all enjoy better quality of life as a result of space research and development, and I'm afraid your attitude gives the majority of forward thinking Australians a bad name. Wake up Nicholas!

Well poverty is the same everywhere, the difference between your and my country is that your media is biased and no body shows the progress india is making and you guys rather concentrate in getting jealous coz we have left you way behind too. Remember india got independent only in 1948 and the goverment is not a fool to ignore the poor. India is the second fastest growing economy with 2nd largest population so the process of eradicating the poverty will be slow. So my advice to all you guys is not to get jealous of india's pogress in these fields and not to worry about india's poverty at the same time. If we can come this far at this pace in such a short time then obvoiusly we have the capacity to deal with other issues too.

This headline is truely misleading. Two possible reasons, either the writer is ignorant enough believe that this it will happen or his purposely trying mislead readers into reading this article. With all the respect to india's achivement with it's recent moon mission, India does don't have the technological and financial capacity to send man to the moon in just 7 years. they haven't even put a man to space yet, let alone to the moon in 7 years, I don't think any country has the capacity to achive a moon landing in 7 years; that include the US, Russia or China.

I think you people from so called developed countries shouldn't worry about poor people in India, they are very clever, their slogan is, ' why should we work when we are getting every thing for free. ' Everybody from so called developed countries are asking the same question Why India is spending so much money on manned moon mission?. The answer is WE ARE DOING IT, BECAUSE WE CAN, WE HAVE MONEY , WE HAVE TALENT,WE HAVE THE TECHNOLOGY. IF U HAVE GUTS TO DO IT, THEN SHOW THE WORLD THAT U CAN DO IT.

India is not able to perfrom this is due to lack of government support. I am sure that India has a large pool of intelligent people, but to claim it has the worlds most intellegent people is beyond any substance. even if it is true, space mission is not about a few people here and there that has ourstanding IQs, its has alot to do with the Country's ablility to develop and fund a large pool of technological enabled engineers, scientists and managers that can work as a whole to achive a outcome. India has done a great job for the moon mission and will provide much needed competition into the field of space exploration that, I hope, is for the benefit of the whole mankind.

Well I see some people from so called developed world using third grade language, so much for education. Anyways, India will not be sending a manned moon mission till 2020. As of know the government has approved only a manned space mission (not to the moon but just a space walk). As for benefits, India is one of the few countries who can launch satellites and has a very good success ratio. It has launched satellites for other countries in the past but to get a bigger pie of that trade it needs to first establish itself as a serious player. This exercise helps in doing exactly that. Moreover, India has not only been successful it is also cost effective and can launch satellites at 1/10th of what it costs elsewhere. So overall by being inexpensive and also having a good success rate, it hopes to be a dominant player in the space exploration. And to all the ignorant elites, this space mission had 11 probes within it and 5 out of them where from foreign countries and am sure, India must have charged them accordingly. So even here, it gets some return on investment. As for feeding the poor, yes its a big problem and considering that India has a billion plus population even a 20% population in poverty is a big headache. But India has been working on that and the poverty levels have been coming down over the years. And Keydic, we don't want to be western cool. We are cool anyways. Way cooler than you are and thats why we like hot curry. Life needs to be spiced up else it leaves a bland taste in the mouth. :)
