Chandrayaan 1 within 500 km of the moon

Jayesh Limaye, Nov 04, 2008 1105 hrs IST

Chandrayaan-1 has been orbiting earth in an elliptical orbit at 2,67,000 km apogee and 465 km perigee since 29 October.

Chandrayaan 1 - India's first unmanned lunar spacecraft, moved closer to the moon today, when it broke free from it elliptical orbit around the earth, speeding into deep space towards the moon. This was disclosed by a top space agency official.

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) director S. Satish told IANS yesterday, "The liquid apogee motor (LAM) on board will be fired around 5.00 a.m. Tuesday for about five minutes to make the transition and position the spacecraft at about 500 km from the moon's surface and over 3,84,000 km away from the earth."

These complex maneuvers were carried out from the spacecraft's control room at ISRO's telemetry, tracking and command network (Istrac) in coordination with the deep space network (DSN) at Byalalu, which is about 40 km from Bangalore.

"Additional velocity will be given to the spacecraft to enter the lunar orbit Saturday (Nov 8) for a rendezvous with the moon. With calibrated firing of its LAMs, it will be inserted into its designated orbit, which will be about 100 km from the lunar surface.

In the present orbit, Chandrayaan has taken six days to go round the earth once. The spacecraft performance is being monitored closely and its health parameters are normal," said Mr. Satish.

As you may all be aware, Chandrayaan-1 has been orbiting the earth in an elliptical orbit at 2,67,000 km apogee (farthest point from earth) and 465 km perigee (nearest point to earth) since 29 October.

It was launched on 22 October on board the 316-tonne PSLV-C11 from Satish Dhawan space centre at Sriharikota spaceport off the Andhra Pradesh coast, 80 km north of Chennai. We will keep you posted for more news about the Chandrayaan, so keep watching this space.

India must send astronauts to the moon as soon as possible to establish a Union Territory so that He-3 mining rights are Indian rights as other nations are preparing to establish their own moon bases. Remember Australia was once a barren land 600 years ago, today Indians need a visa to travel there.

A proud moment for every Indian. Let's celebrate the achievement by showing our solidarity with the science community at ISRO, but certainly not forget any individual (including even the house keeping and catering staff @ ISRO)who has contributed sincerely to this great national endeavour. It's the collective might of every INDIAN. JAI HIND. P.S. But wonder how much more we could achieve sans the corruption, indifference, etc.

INDIA DID THIS WITH A COST WHICH IS MUCH LOWER THAN WHAT OTHER COUNTRIES DID THE SAME. WE WILL ALSO REACH THE MOON WITH A MAN INSIDE WITH IN THE TARGET DATE.

China spent $199m for similar project; naturally, because they had to procure from Russia...

by CCS Roy, Washington DC, on Nov 04, 2008 10:20 PM, Report abuse

Do all of you realize how much more important this will be than the Indian team winning the World Cup? Let us see if the media take it that seriously. The success of the Chandrayaan shows our scientific community's calibre and organisation. Indian scientists are so motivated that they do not need any encouragement - they show the way while everyone else is ignorant. But it will be interesting to see how the media treats the success of an Indian object on the moon that we see every night!!! I guarantee some religious sentiments will be stoked and the media will make a huge uproar over it. Like they showed Narasimha avatar when they heard of a mix-bred human embryo that lived for 30 days or so. Our scientists have passed their test easily. We have to pass our maturity test as a society. Let us see how this one goes.

The success of CHANDRAYAAN-1 heralds the dawn of a new era in Indian space research and development which will undoubtedly inspire budding scientists who will lead the nation on its prosperous route. Thanks to the untiring efforts of the ISRO team

This is an illustration of India's march forward with the bigger picture in mind regarding the future and its position in the world, despite all the internal squabbles and unnecesary distraction from the path of progress. Its wonderful that we are able to witness this historic event. Jai Hind!
