Blu-Ray, the final frontier

Apart from the players still being costly to produce, the main reason is the slow adoption of HD capable displays and also HD content.

After having won the HD format war, you would think Blu-Ray discs and players would get cheaper but unfortunately this is did not happen. Apart from the players still being costly to produce, the main reason is the slow adoption of HD capable displays and also HD content.

In a recent interview, a Sony representative has clearly stated that Blu-Ray may be the last Optical Disc format we will see. This does not mean that there won't be any physical disc format in the future, but they plan on creating different incarnations of the format that should ensure its long life.

Current Blu-Ray discs already store a whopping 50GB of data (dual-layer BD) and is mostly used for games (Metal Gear Solid 4 is the first game ever to use a full dual layer BD) and also some BD movies. You can comfortably store an entire full HD movie along with some special features on a single Blu-Ray disc.

But some studios are already experimenting with additional technology like stereoscopic 3D and Super Hi-Vision video technology that allows resolutions of up to 7680x4320 which would require massive amounts of storage due to the very high bit rates of 22.5MB/s - 75MB/s. Compare that to the 40MB/s speed of a Blu-Ray disc.

Of course this is still way into the future and normal 25GB Blu-Ray discs haven't gone mainstream yet. But is good to know that Sony along with Pioneer and TDK and working hard to optimize the format in order to make it as commercially feasible as possible.

Right now 720p LCD televisions are picking up pace with prices dropping everyday and more and more people becoming aware about the advantages of HD, it won't be long before we say goodbye to the trusty old CRT we so fondly love. I believe Blu-Ray has a lot of potential to expand and we've just seen a small preview of what this technology is capable of.
