Apple MobileMe is still vulnerable

Plagued since its launch in July, Apple's MobileMe online service has reportedly to face a new vulnerability, compromising some user data.

Sniffing public file sharing folders is the latest in a string of problems that has plagued the service, which replaced Apple's Mac service.

Plagued since its launch in July, Apple's MobileMe online service has been reported to face a new vulnerability, compromising some user data. This service, which provides data syncing between a user's iPhone 3G and his home computer, is an easy target for hackers to obtain subscribers' e-mail addresses. Analysts warn that this could lead to many phishing scams and spam.

MobileMe can be exploited in the following way: A hacker uses a Web crawler to sniff users' public file sharing folder called iDisk to gain access to the entire MobileMe user name list. With the list thus obtained, spammers will add @me.com of @mac.com to convert a user name into an e-mail address.

Though it is said to be a vulnerability, it is more of a nuisance and annoyance as the hacker doesn't really gain access to the user's personal data such as credit card number or password.

All that he can get is a list of e-mail address which makes this just another way to get those. If you are online, you are anyways open to spamming. A rather serious issue with MobileMe, which has existed even before this new one is the fact that while Apple encrypts MobileMe login information, it leaves the data that it moves for users on the web, unencrypted, leaving it open for eavesdropping.

Apple charges USD 99 a year for the MobileMe service in the US and it is therefore high time that it makes amends and gets these issues fixed.
